Can't Find Integrated Camera on x220 in Windows 10 Pro

2017-08-12, 14:13 PM

Dear Ladies and Gents,

I've decided to buy my x220 company notebook, and make some upgrades on it. I installed the latest BIOS version. I bought a Transcend MSA370 mSATA SSD module, and replaced the integrated WWAN card with it. The concept was , that I keep the original 320GB hard drive for storage and install a Windows 10 Pro OS on the SSD card. So far so good, everything went fine, I had some issues setting up the hotkeys, but managed to do so.

But then, I realized, that I can't make the integrated camera work. I pressed FN+F6, but no camera options showed, only audio and microphone settings. I checked the BIOS settings, the camera is enabled. I even tried to install the camera drivers for Windows 7 (no later version on support site), but it had no effect. Then I checked the Device Manager and saw that the camera does not even show up there (no "Imaging Devices" block, no wonder the driver install didn't do anything). I started googling and found some people who said they managed to solve this problem, but the solution had to do something with installing the OS on the original hard drive, and do some more magic, but to tell You the truth it wasn't so convincing, seemed like solution by lucky guesses. Does anyone have any idea about the source of the problem, and how to get the cam working? Or at least "seen" by the OS?

thanks in advance,

gábor

You could try the following driver.. it may or may not work.

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds032431

Your X220 is not officially supported Win 10 by Lenovo.

Hi!

Thanks for the tip. But I don't believe it's a driver problem. Since the Camera does not show up in the Device Manager, there's nothing to "drive". First of all, we should find out why I don't see it there (while the BIOS sees it, or at least there's a BIOS setting for it).

I think it has to do something with me changing the WWAN card and installing the OS on the mSATA SSD instead of the original hard drive? But why does it matter?...

Go into Device Manager, View, Show hidden devices.

Tried that too, but still no "imaging devices" in Device Manager.

However, it does not seem to be an x220 specific problem. Found some MS forums with people complaining about the same defect after upgrading to win10, but also on win8. E.g.: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-hardware/web-camera-not-detected-imaging-devices-missing-in/4f1f6d17-dde6-4f4f-b8d7-7ed03ca608a1?auth=1

Also tried to install the driver package you suggested, but nothing happened (except that the driver files are put to a C:\DRIVERS\WIN\CAMERA folder). I also tried to add the driver manually to device manager by selecting the .inf file from this folder, but after selecting it, de "wizard" shows nothing in the "model" box, and the "next" button is blank.

Any ideas?

Look under the USB controller list in Device Manager  for the camera.

You may or may not find a driver that works on win 10.

Tried that too, but I don't see anything suspicious there.

Question: is it possible to change the camera to a new one, that fits the x220 and is tested/guaranteed to work properly with Windows 10? Does anyone know of such a brand/model? I saw a video on YouTube about a guy who put a camera in his old x201 notebook. However, he uses some kind of a linux distro... It didn't seem complicated, only had to take off the bezel cover, and make some room for it.

Thanks

FWIW I have an X220 with Windows 10 Pro and the camera works with the default Microsoft driver. Here's where it shows in Device Manager:

This machine is totally Microsoft, I have not applied any Lenovo updates.

Perhaps you should try a diagnostic or known good Windows or Linux image before resorting to hardware repairs?

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

Well, that sounds promising. I haven't looked for it there, but I will check it out on saturday (I'm on holiday now). Trying a linux live CD is also a good point, since I intend to use my x220 in a dual boot mode, so I will have to come to that point at some time anyway. :) I'd like to install the latest Debian, but I think first I'll try Ubuntu or Mint for testing.

Actually I have three of these machines, and I want to give two of them to my nephews as a gift. I could live without the camera, but why I'm so insistent on making it work: I don't want to give a semifunctional machine as a gift to anyone... :)

thanks!

Re: Can't Find Integrated Camera on x220 in Windows 10 Pro

So, I've looked for the camera in the device manager, but couldn't find it.

Tried an Ubuntu linux live cd (16.04), still no luck.

I came in posession of my second x220 and did the following:

1. Checked if Ubuntu sees the camera: Yes. /dev/video0, and Cheese application shows image.

2. Changed the integrated WWAN module to a new mSATA SSD, then checked camera in Ubuntu again. Success.

3. Updated to latest BIOS version, checked camera again, still works

4. Installed Win 10 pro on the new SSD, installed the missing things (hotkey, comm. utility, etc), checked camera using FN+F6, and Voila!, camera works. Checked it in DevMan, at last I have the Imaging Devices/Integrated Camera

This is a happy end for setting up my SECOND x220 with win 10 pro. However, the fact that I can't make my camera turn up on my first one seems to indicate, that the integrated camera is broken in that one. I guess I will have to find a replacement for it. Anyone has a suggestion for a good integrated camera model for X220? I've heard that some better (HD) cams come with x230 that fit the x220 also.

Any ideas?

thx
