Re: Can we now install mSATA SSDs in our US X230s without voiding the warranty?

This is correct the mSATA will not cause a warranty woe.  Smiley Wink

This is an optional CRU of course. So if your computer came with the mSATA you can change them out yourself or have a Lenovo tech do it for you. If the part did not come with the computer then you are pretty much on your own with installing one.

Now if something goes horribly wrong during installation it is as Mark said a sticky situation. But nothing should go wrong with a simple mSATA installation.

I do hope this helps with your questions.

Alex

Re: Can we now install mSATA SSDs in our US X230s without voiding the warranty?

Alex1906 - Thanks for the link.

The confusion is understandable considering the linked information is in conflict with the Hardware Maintenance Manual Second Edition (October 2012).

Re: Can we now install mSATA SSDs in our US X230s without voiding the warranty?

That is no problem PNutts.

This is very true it is confusing with the misconception here.  I will notify the correct person and see if we can't get some agreeing information on here. Smiley Wink

At the moment I would wait to see the response I get just to make sure that all the information is correct.  This way we aren't voiding any warranties. But right now I am in contact with the correct department so I should know here shortly which is 100% correct.

Glad I could help,

Alex

EDIT- Spelling Error

We are never "voiding warranties" Smiley SurprisedSmiley Tongue - which is why I use the term "warranty woes."

It would be great if we could get confirmation about this to put this issue to bed once and for all.

Re: Can we now install mSATA SSDs in our US X230s without voiding the warranty?

Alright everyone,

The word is in and the survey says........... Don't do it.

This is information from Lenovo:

The mSATA is in fact a FRU and only replaceable by a Lenovo Technician.  So The Hardware Maintenance Manual is correct and not the Parts Look-Up information.

Glad we could clear up the warranty woe, onslaught of ideas.  (or Think Smiley Wink

Hope this helps,

Alex

Thanks for the clarification - even if it wasn't what we wanted to hear.

Any idea if the mSATA is a FRU in the rest of the world or just in North America?

Re: Can we now install mSATA SSDs in our US X230s without voiding the warranty?

Well I do believe it is still considered a FRU every where.  This is due to a specific process that Lenovo goes through to Format the mSATA's in the newer machines.  I'm not sure of this process myself but it sounds important. Smiley Wink

But it does require the removal of the Palmrest which is definitely a FRU so at the time being it is considered a FRU due to the process of changing it out and the formatting.

Hope this helps,

Alex

Re: Can we now install mSATA SSDs in our US X230s without voiding the warranty?

Alex - thanks

I'm not sure that Lenovo's explanation makes sense (unless they are are formatted as a cache instead of as a normal drive) but at least we know where we stand.

Cheers

Re: Can we now install mSATA SSDs in our US X230s without voiding the warranty?

Alex:

Sorry to keep beating the horse Smiley Happy but the palmrest (at least in the US) is an Optional-service CRU. Lenovo shipped a replacement to me and that classification is consistent across all links in this thread. And I am staying away from the mSATA. Smiley Wink

What the hell?  As I bought a Crucial 256GB mSATA SSD and installed it myself (which was quite easy) on my brand new X230T, that means that I have wasted my warranty and I'm SOL if there is something that breaks in the next 2 years?  Good job, Lenovo...With this and what I read on their customer service, this X230T will most likely be my first and last Lenovo computer...
