Can you add WWAN to an X1 Yoga 3rd Gen?

2018-02-15, 12:27 PM

I purchased one of the pre-configured X1 3rd gen notebooks online.  Couldn't get wwan preinstalled.  Can i purchase said wwan card and install myself?  I heard the antennas for wwan are now built into the screen, is that true?  If so would I just need the card?  I hard it's a Fibocom 850 card, yet i can't find this to purchase anywhere (not even on ebay).  I hate the wwan on the 2nd gen, never works right and speeds are horrible.  Hopefully 3rd gen with this new model card is better (main reason for upgrading).  thx

Hi

There migt be two antennas kit types in x1 yoga gen3 - WLAN only and WLAN+WWAN, depending on the laptop' MTM.

The only compatible wwan card for this laptop is Fibocom L850-GL with Lenovo service p/n (FRU) 01AX786. Any other wwan cards, even generic L850-GL one without Lenovo p/n, will not work.

There is a store for USA & Canada
https://lenovo.encompass.com/

The Fibocom card is absent presently.

The support page claims the link to the store for USA to purchase the parts online, but from my side the link is to the partslookup page
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht036683

Is this the correct card for the X1C 6th gen also?  My unit was listed as upgradeable.

I've also see 7565 listed places but haven't seen it confirmed.

yes, Fibocom L850-GL (FRU 01AX786) is an applicable card for x1c gen6. As well as Lenovo branded Sierra em7565, FRU 01AX784 and 01AX762.

Hi Ave1024

Did you purchased this card?

I would like to order a X1 Yoga 3rd gen and I do not know if I should still wait or if I should buy one and purchased this card too.

Thanks

Yep you are right. I cannot find this part too, I am located in Switzerland.

However according the website (Lenovo Switzerland) the new X1 with LTE should be available in April.

So I suppose I will wait until these new units will be availabe, on the old one, there is a discount of 10%, which makes no sense for me.

Cheers

I tried calling the parts department and both WWAN cards are "not available" to order.  So i started a return request with Lenovo.  They shouldn't advertise a notebook as being "WWAN Upgradable" when the parts are not available.
