Please share your source with us. That sounds like BS.

Sorry FCC regulations prevent Yoga and some clamshell models from adding WWAN cards aftermarket. It must be ordered with the system.

Specifically, what FCC regulation would prevent an upgrade path?  The PCIE slot and SIM are both present in my unit?  Add the antenna and WWAN card and it would be ready to go?

Hi,
This should be the regulation.

Thanks

I placed an order with the parts department for both WWAN cards for my X1 Carbon 6th Gen (I like both of them I just want to install whichever one arrives first).

Yes - the manufacturer clearly doesn't want the average person just popping their expensive and new Lenovo laptop open to install such a card.  However if your laptop has a SIM tray and it is listed as being compatible - there is no reason you can't slow down and carefully install your new WWAN card when it is compatible (use the compatibility matrices to ensure).  I may message you all back when the card arrives.

Have you had any luck? Apparently my laptop (20KHA006AU) is not WWAN upgradable although it comes with a SIM tray.

Lenovo really does not care about WWAN anymore on this years (2018) devices.  I ordered two compatible WWAN cards in April - both are on backorder still with the parts department.  Unsure of any firm date at this point.  I know my device is eventually upgradeable per the specs and the fact that it has a SIM tray pre-installed.  Lenovo is sourcing WWAN from two different vendors but both of this years boards are unavailable still.

That's disappointing to hear. My laptop has the SIM tray preinstalled too but apparently not compatible. If you manage to get yours working I'll give it a go too.
