Re: Can you add WWAN to an X1 Yoga 3rd Gen?

2018-07-17, 18:05 PM

Alright - final update to this thread for all the haters and the doubters.  I succesfully committed laptop surgery in my laptop ER and installed a compatible Fibocom WWAN adapter and then had to install a dedicated WWAN antenna and voila my pre-installed SIM tray actually had something to talk to and work with.  You order FRU 01YR426 and 01AX786.  You may void your warranty, you may break something inside the laptop - but its your device and you manage your risk tolerances.  Don't let someone tell you this can't be done.  I am surfing this website over my WWAN right now.

Happy laptop modifications for this essential WWAN feature that Lenovo never should have even shipped out without having made available to us.  Also shame on them for later adding WWAN and only factory-installing it on low end touch screen Carbon X1 devices.  I waited 3 years to have a Carbon X1 touchscreen and you are only going to let me buy a WWAN enabled device with half the max RAM and a tiny SSD?  The guys in product development aren't thinking clearly any longer when it comes to equipping this lightweight laptop with the components that users on the go really need.

Hi webrob, Thanks for the update on the successful WWAN retrofit, glad you got it working!

As for the availability of WWAN already integrated from Lenovo, it's available on X1 Yoga 3rd Gen, and X1 Carbon 6th Gen, all the way up to the highest spec systems, including touch screen. Check https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/ and choose a Customizable model.

What's not available is "WWAN upgradeable" or "WWAN ready" X1 Yoga 3rd Gen or X1 Carbon 6th Gen systems. They either come with WWAN, or without WWAN. No in-between, for reasons described by Lenovo Staff earlier in this thread.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

bananaman you are gravely wrong in stating "the availability of WWAN already integrated from Lenovo, it's available on X1 Yoga 3rd Gen, and X1 Carbon 6th Gen, all the way up to the highest spec systems"

If you try to configure X1 YOGA with HDR and WWAN you get this ERROR
"The WWAN 4G LTE is not available on configurations with the HDR WQHD display with Dolby vision."

This fatal error has still not been fixed by Lenovo. If you could contact them immediately into fixing this that would be helpful :)

webrob, this is amazing to hear, Where did you learn to install WWAN in X1 yoga? also, do you have X1 yoga HDR model?

It would be a dream come true to learn how to install WWAN on HDR model since sadly Lenovo has no customer support on this serious issue. In fact, they told me it can't be done!

Hi wowing, You are correct, in the USA WWAN is not available with the X1 Yoga 3rd Gen HDR option. It's apparently because because the antenna is not tunable as needed to support all the carrier bands in the USA. It's also apparently why a WWAN X1 Carbon 6th Gen can't be optioned with the IR camera.

Is there anybody that has successfully performed the same surgery (install WWAN antenna and card) on a X1Y3 with HDR-screen & normal webcam and is willing to share their experience?

Sadly by the time its known, the X1Y4 will come out :D and by then Lenovo will probably make the same mistake.

I do have a X1 Yoga 3rd gen with the HDR display and standard cam and just installed the WWAN card Fibocom XMM7360 L850-GL CAT9. It is recognized by the Yoga and installs immediately. It also indentifies the SIM card.

The problem still is to get the antenna kit FRU 01YR426 or 425 which seems to be not available anywhere especially if you live in Austria as I do...

Thanks JCieh.

So if I understood correctly, you are also lacking the antenna and would still need to get that installed in order to have LTE?

Have you tried this shop for the antenna? https://lenovo.encompass.com/item/11589538/Lenovo/01YR425/ And are you sure this is the right antenna?

For my X1Y3 (Type 20LE) I would be taking this antenna: https://lenovo.encompass.com/item/11586581/Lenovo/01AY958/

Hi Bianco17.

Thanks for the advice. I’m really not sure which antenna to chose. I also have a 20LE. Precisely it’s a 20LES01W00. This one doesn’t have the WWAN antenna preinstalled. So I have to install the antenna AND the modem card.

I‘m travelling to the US early October until early November. So the idea is to pick up the right antenna for my YOGA and install it there. I‘ll keep you informed.
