[Carbon X1] Battery drains quickly

Hello all

let me start with the technical details of my laptop:

  • Lenovo Carbon X1
  • Bought ~2 months ago (new) at a reseller in the US
  • i5 3rd generation @ 1.7GHz
  • 4GB DDR3 (soldered on motherboard)
  • 128GB SSD (Samsung), must be SATA III (6GB/s) I guess
  • Windows 8 Pro x64

Furthermore:

  • +40GB free space on the hard drive
  • Original charger used, always
  • Laptop was never 'opened' (ie with screws)
  • device mainly used to text editing, browsing and Photoshop
  • Background apps/services: Apple iTunes services, Dropbox, Lenovo mouse/trackpad service and startup utilities like Google Update, Java update, Adobe Reader Speedlaunch
  • I do not shut down my laptop most of the times, I simply put my computer in sleep modus (in other words: I close the lid of the laptop)
  • I do play games on this laptop, but of course I do not expect the battery to last many hours when doing so. The battery drains quickly only in 'normal' situations - gaming, video editing and lots of Photoshop do not count of course.
  • Connected to the internet all the time (no 3G, just WiFi)
  • Bluetooth disabled.

Now let me explain the situation.

The laptop is fully charged using the original charger. The power plan is set to Power Saver (image). Brightness is set to around 60% of maximum according to the build in indicator of Windows 8.

The apps that are open are Google Chrome ( with 5 tot 15 tabs most of the time), Outlook, Dropbox and one metro apps (weather or the app store).

(full image, click here)

As you can read, no heavy usage. The CPU is stable between 5% tot 20% and the RAM is at 40% to 70%.

Feel free to ask some technical questions, I should be able to answer them as I'm a bachelor student in IT.

Thanks for your help in this matter. Feel free to add your own experiences or personal tips.

Thomas

Re: [Carbon X1] Battery drains quickly

The screenshot says it all: 88% battery left and I only get around 3h 16min... Or with a full charge around 4 hours.

That's about par for the course in my experience. Sorry.

Re: [Carbon X1] Battery drains quickly

Can you go to Lenovo Settings on you metro screen and enable battery stretch when used on battery? See if it helps.

Re: [Carbon X1] Battery drains quickly

If I could only be able to install the Lenovo Settings app... I get "This app isn't available for your PC" error message in the Windows Store on Windows 8.

I opened the link from here : http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/app/3078e868-a336-4a13-af40-8f37982cf591

Searching for "Lenovo Settings" in the Windows Store on my pc doesn't even show any relevant results.

EDIT: and I found the answer why I can't install this metro app:http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Tablet-ThinkPad-Laptops/quot-Lenovo-Settings-quot-on-x230t-and-...

Re: [Carbon X1] Battery drains quickly

But you mentioned that your laptop came with Windows 8 x64?

Re: [Carbon X1] Battery drains quickly

It *has* Windows 8 installed on it, it came with Windows 7. So yes, I did mention it runs Windows 8

(You should admit it's a weird thing that the Lenovo settings app would only work on laptops that were shipped with Windows 8, but not upgraded to Windows 8?)

Re: [Carbon X1] Battery drains quickly

You mentoined at your system specs that it si Win8 x64

I admit it, but its not due to Lenovo, it is in fact because of Microsoft. 100%

In any case, stay tuned.

Re: [Carbon X1] Battery drains quickly

So regarding my issue: it is considered normal that my battery only lasts 4 hours with normal use and only 2 hours with heavy usage (heavy browsing, music playing, FTP constantly transferring, multiple other Windows open...)?
