Carbon X1 Gen 8 - Grainy Webcam Quality

2020-06-16, 1:24 AM

I recently started using a new X1 Carbon Gen 8 and the included camera quality has been very low with a very grainy picture. I've reinstalled the latest webcam driver for Windows 10 and confirmed in Settings --> Camera that I have my camera set to the highest quality for photos and videos (0.9MP, 16:9, 1280x720 for photos and 720p, 16:9, 30fps for videos). I've also cleaned the webcam glass to no avail - can someone please advise what the issue might be? I'm assuming / hoping not a hardware issue that would necessitate a return. Thanks!

I have exactly the same problem. The camera quality sucks! It is much worse than the Gen 7 I have.

I have the exact same problem. The camera quality is just terrible.

It's worth pointing out that I'm using Ubuntu, and the camera is the one with the IR sensor made for Windows Hello.

I run Windows 10 and the IR Camera. I reinstalled everything and the image still looks awful, like a 200x100 resolution and slightly out of focus.

I am on Win10 on my X1 Gen 8 camera quality is fine. I am using realtek driver version 10.0.19041.20142 (Lenovo publishes 10.0.19041.20134) which I found on Windows update and manually updated. It updates both the IR and standard part in one go.

I also now see the the .142 is available for download here.

https://necacom.net/index.php/realtek/web-camera/12430-realtek-web-camera-drivers-version-10-0-19041-20142-whql

I have no clue if the driver update from .134 -> .142 will do anything for you, but it's worth a try.

Just to add - Lenovo also has a newer driver for the camera on this link:

https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/downloads/DS506557

If you are more comfortable with a Lenovo based download link. It's linked to a different Thinkpad type but works great on the X1.

Slightly newer version on the above: 10.0.19041.20143

Re:Carbon X1 Gen 8 - Grainy Webcam Quality

I have the same problem, with my x1 yoga 3rd gen. With the normal integrated camera Realtek.

When I bought the laptop the quality was so low that I had to activate the warranty. (Of course I first tried various drivers but unsuccessfully).

The certified technician replaced the camera without success. He said that it was a faulty motherboard.

So I had to ship my laptop to their European center in Poland.

The laptop came back after a week with a note that it was just a software issue. They wrote that they "just" reinstalled win10. The camera was definitely working much better but was still very grainy.

I tried the new drivers but nothing changes...

I also did the following test to assess a bit the size of the problem: I saved the same picture with different "quality" settings and the quality does increase from 0.008 up to 0.2 MP but after that no sensible quality improvements with 0.3 - 0.4 - 0.5 and 0.9 MP...

This is the quality our camera should have instead on a video test performed by a youtuber: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXL49kP7bnQ

I am very upset!!

I have got the same issue. I just bought it a month ago and the camera quality is awful. Its worse than a 5 year old tablet with almost close to black and white pixels and not clear. Did anyone manage to get it resolved or should i consider returning back to lenovo

It's crazy. My P1 gen 2 replaced a 6 year old Thinkpad yoga 15... which had a MUCH better webcam than this one.

This webcam is so bad, it reflects badly on my company when trying to deal with clients/sales calls.  What kind of a professional uses a laptop whose webcam makes it look like it was bought in 2010?
