Charge x1 extreme gen 2 from usb-c monitor connection?

2019-11-07, 13:44 PM

Can the new x1 extreme gen 2 be charged from the usb-c connection to a 4k monitor, for example, the hp z27 discussed in this story https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-4k-monitors/ ? What I mean is no separate power cable is needed, just the usb-c cable connecting the laptop to the monitor. The wirecutter review says this is one of the nice features of the HP z27 monitor.

I used my X1 Extreme Gen 1 with a 60 W PD USB-C monitor connection for a while.

It seemed to work fine in the beginning. If you increase performance demands (gaming for example), you may find out that your battery gets drained, however, because 60 W are not enough to power CPU and GPU at the same time.

I also got sporadical connection drop-outs (maybe once a week): the display went dark, and I would have to power cycle the monitor to get the picture back.

This problem disappeared completely when I connected the notebook power supply again.

Now I'm using a Thunderbolt dock with 100 W PD. No problems for now regarding power delivery.
