Conflicting instructions for BIOS update: boot from CD but undock from Ultrabase?

2008-02-14, 5:07 AM
I have an X61 and am trying to update the BIOS to the latest.

Lenovo support has a downloadable "BIOS Update Bootable CD" for my model of ThinkPad - an ISO image that I can use to create a bootable CD that will update my BIOS.

However the instruction file includes this sentence: "If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding." This is before I boot from the CD.

If I undock from the ThinkPad X6 UltraBase then how can I boot from the CD??
Should I just ignore the instruction to undock?

Sorry if this seems silly but I'm a bit paranoid about updating the BIOS.
FYI here is the download page at lenovo:

Thanks for any clarification

Mike

You only need to use the CD BIOS upgrade if you are running Vista X64, if you are I haven't got any suggestions for you, (at the moment). If you are not running X64 you can use this update. Don't forget to delete BIOS passwords and to un-dock.

The Ultrabase is not considered a docking station or port replicator for the purposes of a BIOS upgrade, or at least it never was on any of my X2x or X3x systems.

James

Thanks for the replies.

I have just downgraded my new X61 to XP Pro
lenovo's downloads section doesn't seem to be constraining the list of applicable downloads according to the OS I select.
i.e. I enter my machine type and then I have the opportunity to choose my OS - the list of downloads that is then returned also includes items that don't apply to my OS.

Thus even though I have defined my system as XP Pro it returns a BIOS ISO image that is intended for Vista X64

I will try using that BIOS update utility instead.

Thanks

Mike

Mike,

go to this site, it's a heck of alot easier to use. On the other hand you can also use system update, it'll get most automatically for you. For SU make sure .NET Framework v.2.0 or later is installed.
