Copying the System Update folder from one x220 to another

2011-12-07, 9:44 AM

Hi there,

I have a batch of x220 machines which I need to update using ThinkVantage System Update. I have been told that I can download all the updates into the System Update folder on one machine, and then copy that folder to all the other machines. Then when they run System Update, they won't need to re-download all the updates and will automatically detect the existing files in the folder.

Is this actually possible? I've tried copying the folder onto the new machine in Safe Mode, but when I reboot and run System Update, it still tries to download all the updates even though they're already in the folder.

Many thanks,

Jon

*** UPDATE ***

I noticed that when I selected all Recommended Updates and all Optional Updates, it still took a while to download the files (my initial reason for the post), but when I only selected Optional Updates, it flew through the download part.

I'm not sure why it can't reference the local copy of the files for the Recommended Updates, but that seems to be the way to do it (copy the Session folder across, then install Optional Updates, and then let the Recommended Updates come down from the internet as normal).

For administrators like yourself

Thinkvantage administor tools

try reading System Update 4.0 Deployment Guide for administrator, which leads to either

 a) thin installer or

 b) update retriever

both of which helps you do mass updates from a common folder

You'd need to copy just the Session folder.

I've done this with a T400 across different OSes.

W520: 2960XM, Q2000M @ 1091/1380, 32GB RAM, 500GB&750GB HDD & 500GB SSD, FHD&MB168B+
X61T: L7500, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, XGA screen, Ultrabase
W550s: 5600U, K620M at 1164/1281, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 3K touchscreen
X200s: SL9400, 6GB RAM, 64GB SD card, WXGA+ screen
TPT1: 1839-23U

Re: Copying the System Update folder from one x220 to another

Hi again,

I decided to take the route that ColonelONeill suggested, as my boss said this is similar to the way he did it in the past, and he wants it to continue this way. But he can't remember exactly what he did.

So I've tried copying the Session folder from an updated machine to a non-updated machine, but the System Update still appears to be downloading the updates from the internet. However, it seems a bit faster than before, but I would have thought that it would be *really* fast, given that the updates are already on the machine. But it's not :-(

The only thing I can think is that it has *most* of the updates in the Session folder, but there are still a few that it has to download. Hence it still taking a couple of minutes to process the download. So I'm going to double check that the source machine has absolutely every update that's available, and then start again.

Unless there's something else I need to do along with copying the Session folder?

Many thanks,

Jon
