Critical Update on Firmware for Type C PDFW Function?? (X395, X495s)

2020-03-21, 11:18 AM

The update mentions that it is critical without naming any Problem or CVE:

https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/r13tr01w.txt

What was/is the problem?

Has anyone heard anything related?

Looks kind of strange to me (particularly in the light of past reports of unrecoverable port damages in laptops due to faulty firmware)

Solved! See the solution

IMHO it is plainly not acceptable, particularly if this concerns a functionality that has a bad history of bugs:
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht508988

Particularly since the 390 and 490 are affected, I wonder if someone simply forgot the AMD variants or if they have different controllers.

This would be kind of a shock to me, because as far as I understood reports operating with the broken controller firmware will lead to premature death of the controller/lower MTBF, even if you patch the firmware later.

This firmware fixes an issue where some USB-C hubs/docks are not detected.  The readme will be updated.  Sorry for this mistake.

This helped me too

Thanks a lot! Leaves me a bit less worried. Still I don't get your severity rating! Why do I need to update this in this case, if I am not experiencing any problem (aka critical). While security issues are rated only recommended.
