I am very happy with my X200, I have 4gb ram, p8600 2.40GHz. I have recently written on its keyboard for 100 hours and I have to say I could not have chosen a better keyboard to do that!
However, would not mind the computer to be more responsive.
Please could you advise if replacing the original drive with the following
Crucial MX300 275GB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal SSD
will improve the computer performance a lot? Is it the right type of drive?
Will replacing the the system to win7 64 bit improve performance even more?

Welcome to the forum!
An SSD upgrade will give you a nice improvement boost indeed. The drive you mention should work with no issues at all.
I would also recommend you to upgrade the RAM to 8GB and switch to a 64bits operating system. Regarding RAM, you will need to buy DDR3-10600 or DDR3-8500 SODIMM modules. Avoid no name RAM and economy models (like Corsair "Value Select" or Kingston "Value RAM") and preferably stick to well known brands like the ones listed below:
Good luck with the purchase(s)!

I checked using an engine of an online shop, it said that the max for my machine is 4 gb.
This is due to outdates specs, at the time of writing there were not 4GB modules available. I have several X200/s models (around 9 if I remember correctly), most of them with SSD and 8GB and they run without any issue.
Just make sure to buy DDR3-8500 or DDR3-10600 modules (the latter more easy to find). If you stay with these specs and my further recommendations above you should have no problems.
I couldn't make DDR3-12800 model work in my machines so I normally recommend to avoid them.

8gig will allow bigger music projects - and I have heard - greater security in chrome. Is that accurate?
so it should be left to windows to preset it?
Yes, you will need a clean install anyway. So let Windows handle it.
After re-installing don't forget to download, install and run Lenovo System Update (I'll do that after running Windows Update anyway)
Good luck and keep us posted how it went. Feel also free to open further topics if you have more questions.
