Disable rapid charging?

2020-12-28, 2:10 AM

Hi all,

Long-time ThinkPad user but brand new X1 Yoga owner here. I tend to keep my machines for a long time and therefore want to preserve my battery lifespan for as long as possible. Is there a way to disable rapid charging on my X1 Yoga 5th gen while using the original 65W charger? From what I can find online, it looks like there used to be a way to do that in Lenovo Vantage. I've looked everywhere in the program and can't find this. Am I missing something obvious???

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

As far as I know there's no way to disable rapid charging. But there is a way to extend battery life when the system is on AC power most of the time.

Lenovo Vantage -> hamburger -> Power -> Battery Charge Threshold. Set the thresholds to something like 60%/65%.

On AC power that charges the battery to 65%, then stops. It then operates the system entirely on AC power until the battery self-discharges to 60%. This could take a period of weeks. When the battery drops to 60% the charger brings it back up to 65% and the cycle repeats.

That's a bummer, why would they remove a good feature like that... =( I've already got the thresholds set which definitely helps. Thanks for the info!

You could look at purchasing a lower watt powered charger from Lenovo, if your laptop has the yellow tip square plug used by lenovo then theres a plethora of power brick wattages available, same with USB-C

Windows would report its 'slow charging' but you'd get your requested functionality, alternatively, could just cap / limit the charge maximum (which i do on my laptops) to prevent excessive wear

I have a Lenovo thinkbook 15 just bought it 2 months ago. It charged up to 80% in about 30 minutes, I had a little issue with sound with  the keyboard I send it to warranty center, when I got it back it charged about 50%n to 40% in 30 minutes. But Lenovo markets 80% in 30 minutes , I have rapid charge enabled in Lenovo vintage so is it fault in windows driver or my information about rapid charge is incorrect as I have seen few people comment 80% in 1 hour. Battery discharge is  fine giving me 20% per hour while playing movies etc.
