Disassembling an X61s to clean or replace the fan

I'm stuck with removing the keyboard. Let's fire up the documentation: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/docs/MIGR-62866

Go to 1050 Keyboard > page 66

It says: Detach the keyboard connector 4 to remove the keyboard 5. With a picture. I am completely puzzled by this; mine doesn't seem to be taken apart easily. Any additional tips or help?

You managed to remove the screws?

You then need carefully lift it, I normally use a small plastic device similar to a guitar pick, and carefully insert it to the bottom of the keyboard to lift it (if memory serves well there used to be a small gap below the FN and Ctrl keys)

what document says is you must push keyboard forward a bit then your able to lift the keyboard at bottom area with a tool.

here is what it says

"Gently push the keyboard forward, as shown in step 2. Then lift up the
keyboard slightly, as shown in step 3."

The keyboard connector should detach with a good upward tug on the tab - away from the motherboard - it lifts straight up.

Hope this helps!

To furthe clarify where I'm stcuk at:

It was easy to remove the keyboard, physically, where I'm stuck is, removing the keyboard cable:

Page 66 of MIGR-62866.pdf was not really helpful.

You just need to pull from the red arrows, it should come out easily (unless somebody's glued it)

Re: Disassembling an X61s to clean or replace the fan

I still need help with the disassembly, replacing the fan.

1. I don't feel the manual is fully covering me (the steps needed in detail). Can you recommend a reliable YouTubbe video going throuch the process?

2. I have the x61s. are the steps and innards (as far as fan replacement goes) the same for x60, x61, x60s, x61s? Sure?

3. Lenovo sells the whole heatsink assembly, if they still sell it. Ebay sellers sell the whole heatsink unit and the fan only separately, too. I guess, it's enough to replace the fan, not the whole heatsink, if at all possible, right? Not much more complicated?

4. Finally, how difficult should be the whole process on a 10-scale? It shouldn't be so complicated, given the insturctions, right? I have tools, I still feel I don't yet have the proper instructions, though.

I'd truly appreciate any of your insights on this, thanks!

Re: Disassembling an X61s to clean or replace the fan

Hi ccjts,

There's a full set of X61 maintenance videos on the Lenovo web site.

Let us know how it goes!

Re: Disassembling an X61s to clean or replace the fan

It sounds like you might not have a lot of experience working inside laptops.  The fan on the X61s is not really a good first project.  It is difficult to get the antenna wires run and connected correctly.  Make sure you mark all the screws as to where they came from.  I like to use blue (painters') masking tape to keep them near the holes.
