Display my Think Pad through iMac late 2015 (5K Retina)

2021-07-26, 19:43 PM

I have a (13" work issue) X13 Yoga Gen 1 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Type 20SX which I would like to channel through my 27" iMac late 2015 (5K Retina) whilst working from home.

The iMac has Thunderbolt3 plus USB3 ports.

I have tried with an  HDMI (from Lenovo) to USB3 (iMac) but that's not giving me any options.

Am I able to use a thunderbolt cable or do I have to get a dock please?

Hello,

I am not particularly familiar with Apple's hardware, but from looking at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592, the Target Display Mode feature was a Mac-specific feature for certain 2009-2014 models.  No 2015 or later Apple Mac's support it.

Welcome to the Community

Might need some more information, especially model numbers for that iMac. I found this article on porting video to an iMac, but I'm not sure if it applies to yours.

Also, could you provide a link to the cable? I've seen a lot of USB3-to-HDMI cables, but not the other way around. Those cables don't work in both directions. I've a hunch you'll need a USB-C to Displayport adapter combined with a Displayport to Thunderbolt device to make it all happen. I don't have your iMac, so I'm only going on the article I linked.
