Do we get Windows License Key with Purchase

2020-10-22, 17:49 PM

If I buy an X1 Carbon Gen 8 w Windows 10 Pro, and I subsequently completely erase all partitions on the SSD , will I have a license key I can use to re-install windows 10?

I do not want to be dependent on preserving some kind of recovery partition on the hard drive.

Welcome to the forum.

The Windows license key isn't stored on the SSD. It's stored in firmware/BIOS where it can't be (easily) erased. You can reformat or replace the SSD, then do a clean install of Windows 10, and it will be fully activated.

If all partitions on SSD were wiped, including any hidden recovery partitions, how would I get copy of Windows for re install? Does Lenovo provide USB or a download so I can burn a bootable USB ? Thanks!

[PSA: You should have created recovery media on a USB drive when you first got the system. This is one important reason why it's important to do this ;) I appreciate that not everyone does this or they may have done it and now can't find the drive or the drive is unreadable, etc.]

thank you very much for all these answers. One final question: if i create a recovery drive, then wipe all partitions on ssd, manually install linux onto half the drive, can i use the recovery disk to install windows to the other half while preserving the linux partitions? thank you!

I believe so. Windows installer should detect that there's another OS installed on part of the physical drive then give you a prompt to select the option of either installing on the non-Linux partition or the entire drive.
