I am looking for a laptop which is small in size (13 - 14 inches) and has strong specs. I locked on to Lenovo X1 Carbon 5th Gen with 512 SSD and 16 GB RAM. My specific requirement is to use 3 external displays via docking station, I look online and found this "http://lenovoquickpick.com/usa/system/thinkpad/x-series/x1-carbon-5th-gen#accessory/68848" and "http://lenovoquickpick.com/usa/accessory/40AC0135US/thinkpad-thunderbolt-3-dock-us". I thought I'd talk to Lenovo Support about this just to make sure. Even their support has two opinions. One agent said that the docking stations will work with 3 external displays (2 display ports and 1 VGA). I talk to another agent after a few minutes and he said the laptop will only work with 2 external displays and not 3.
Can anybody from the community confirm which of the two agents are correct. I currently have HP 650 G2 Probook which works perfectly fine with 2 display ports and 1 VGA port at the same time and let me use 3 external displays.

Thank you for replying. I was with support Live chat right now and they said NO, carbon supports external three displays, but not all at the same time. Means, you can either use 2 usb type-c to have two external displays at a time OR you can use 1 HDMI display at a time. But cannot have 3 displays running at the same time (laptop excluded).

Well if your are using ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock you can use 3 displays with the help of two DP monitors, an HDMI monitor, a VGA monitor, and a USB-C monitor also Three external monitors can be used simultaneously in below mannersource)

Exactly what I thought and proposed to the sales agent, but he said it is not possible. The maximum I can have at a given time is 2 external displays, I can use the display on the laptop as third but in no way (even with the dock) will let me to have 3 external displays at the same time, which does not make sense. So I asked again, "if it won't let me use all three ports on the dock (2 DP's and one HDMI/VGA), then what's the purpose of having them?" To which he replies, it is there because some people don't have VGA or some don't have DP's.
I would not make a purchase until I can make sure that this setup will work. I mean my old HP Probook 640 G1 let me to have 3 external displays, how difficult it would be for Lenovo to get this functionality.
