Re:Does ThinkPad X1 Yoga (3rd Gen) support 5K monitors?

2020-07-19, 2:49 AM

I have both ThinkPad X1 Yoga 3rd gen and 4th gen and I am using Dell 49" ultrawide monitor (native resolution 5120x1440/60Hz).

I can confirm X1 Yoga 3rd gen does NOT support 5120x1440/60Hz and it fallback to 3840x1080/60Hz resolution when connecting to USB-C or HDMI directly to the monitor. I've tried Lenovo Hybrid Doc as well and still the same and couldn't make it output to 5120x1440 even when I use DisplayPort from the dock.

X1 Yoga 4th gen however does support 5120x1440/60Hz via USB-C.

Re:Does ThinkPad X1 Yoga (3rd Gen) support 5K monitors?

I just bought Dell 40" UltraSharp U4021QW with the resolution 5120 x 2160 and want to use it with my X1 Carbon Gen 8 but I only get 30hz at maximum resolution over thunderbolt 3. I have tried attaching my X1 Extreme gen 1 and it works flawless with 60hz so there is no issues with monitor or wiring.

According to the Dell user manual Ice lake (Intel 10th gen) should be supported for 5120 x 2160 @60hz.

Anyone tried this monitor with X1 Carbon gen 8 and got it to work? I have latest BIOS,video drivers, thunderbolt firmware, driver and software.

Evidently some new panels are more demanding that motivate the need for DisplayPort as HDMI lacks enough bandwidth

I use a desktop for UHD video editing etc so I can swap out the graphics card when the existing one comes up short

I own: T400 T500 X220 running Windows 10 x64 & My X230 runs Linux for my webserver. I also own an Apple MacBook along with an iPad Pro 12.9", both with 256GB SSD

I have the same combination: Dell U4021QW display with X1 Carbon Gen 8 laptop. It works with the Dell Thunderbolt cable for up to an hour, then quits with the message: No thunderbolt (90W) signal from your device. Updated all drivers, firmware, BIOS, software. The display works perfectly with my Dell XPS 13 on the same cable.
Not sure why the connectivity is so fragile. I ordered a Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 cable and a Thunderbolt 4 cable. Will report the results.

@Mark561 do you get 30hz or 60hz with x1C g8? I only manage 30hz, resulting in severe input-lag.

I also have the X1 Carbon 6th Gen, and with the Dell 40" UltraSharp U4021QW I'm only able to get 30Hz at 5120x2160.  Things I've tried:

- Using the Thunderbolt 4 cable that Dell provided

- Using a 40 GBPS 0.5m Thunderbolt 3 cable

- Using a DisplayPort -> USB C cable that claims to support 8K

It works fine with all 3 setups in 5K@30Hz or 4K@60Hz.

Any advice?

Sorry, I don't know how to see the refresh rate. I did find a workaround and eventually a solution that worked to my satisfaction:

Workaround: I used a USB-C (computer) to DisplayPort (display) cable. That worked great, except the computer wasn't getting power, so I had to attach a separate power USB-C to the computer.

Solution: I got a CalDigit Element thunderbolt 4 hub. I got rid of the USB-C to DisplayPort cable and it works well. Thunderbolt 4 cable from computer to hub and Thunderbolt 4 cable from hub to display.
