Does ThinkPad x250 support 16 GB RAM

2020-02-16, 6:10 AM

I have laptop ThinkPad x250 - Type 20CM003FRT (i7-5600U/ factory RAM - 8 GB).

  1. I've read:
The notebok specification says that it is posible to install 16 GB module RAM to the laptop with the configuration as I have. Quote
    Chipset Memory
Intel SoC (System on Chip) platform
8GB max (i5-4300U processor) or 16GB max (other processors above) /
    1600MHz DDR3L, one 204-pin SO-DIMM socket
  2. The official BIOS changelog says that such volume of RAM is supported from BIOS version 1.12 (UEFI 1.12/ECP1.11). I have BIOS 1.39 (UEFI 1.39/ECP 1.16)
  3. The Crucial's official site also says that you can upgrade your laptop and offers the particular model Crucial 16GB DDR3L-1600 SODIMM (CT204864BF160B);
  4. Moreover, I've read a lot of messages here and on thinkpads.com. Many people have written that they have successfully installed 16 GB RAM to their laptops.

Based on the above I've bought Crucial 16GB DDR3L-1600 SODIMM (CT204864BF160B). However, when I've installed the module to the laptop it didn't start. After pressing power ON button it flashes keyboard backlight for a moment and mortal silence comes after. If I return its factory RAM (Hynix 8GB HMT41GS6BFR8A-PB) - it works fine.

Which way should I dig?

Welcome to the forums.  After installing RAM did you let it stay on for more than 5 minutes?  The 1st time you install new RAM it takes longer to boot up.

Thank you for your comment.

For the first time - no. But I've tried this hint right now. Unfortunately it doesn't help. More than 20 minutes of waiting after installing 16 GB module RAM and I got the same result - black screen.

Important notice to my previous comment - after pressing power ON button the laptop flashes keyboard backlight for a moment and after that power button's indicator glows and CPU cooler quietly works.

Hello,

I do not have my ThinkPad X250 anywhere near me, but from looking at the ThinkPad X250 Hardware Maintenance Manual, you first need to disable the built-in battery before changing the RAM.  The steps to do this in the BIOS (UEFI) firmware are discussed on page 60.

Re: Does ThinkPad x250 support 16 GB RAM

Hi!
Thank you for your advice. I indeed had plugged-in internal battery-pack during RAM installation. It may be the cause. I only reseted power after changing by pressing additional power button on motherboard for ECP reinicialisation.

I read only 65 page describing memory module changing and I missed common requirement block.

For now I gave RAM-module for diagnostic to dealer service center (nobody can be sure that there is no defects). When it will return I will try right proper procedure of installation and will post the result.

Trader admitted defect of the RAM-module as a result of diagnostic. It'll takes for a month to order new one.

I got a replace and it works fine. So, the matter was in the defect module.

Thanks for all comments.
