Does the 320GB HDD work in the WWAN bay?

2011-07-15, 19:13 PM

Will the connector inside the WWAN bay accept the 320GB Travelstar HDd that comes as standard issue on the X220?

you mean mSATA cards, these are are SSD hdd that fits into the mPCIe slots on the laptop, which the X220 supports.

WWAN bay???

 It's just a slot for a PCI Express Mini Card (about 1" x 2").

I am referring to the internal bay that accepts an SSD SATA drive.  Perhaps it's not the empty bay that is pre-wired for the often-not-included WWAN card, although I thought it was.

I think you are misunderstanding something. There is only a single bay for fitting a 2.5" drive (SSD or HDD). There is an internal PCI Express Mini Card slot (for a WWAN or mSATA SSD card).

Thanks for your patience with me.  Apparently I do misunderstand the sata issue.

My W700 accepts an external pci expresscard. I insert a pci card with 2 SATA ports. Both ports accept a sata cable to an external sata hard drive. If I insert a "mini expresscard" into the WWAN bay, how do I physically connect it to an external sata drive?  Is there an opening for a sata cable to the outside?

there is no opening on that side of the laptop, if you want get a cable to come outside, then you would need cut an opening.

X220 has an ExpressCard slot, can't you just get a card to work in that?

"X220 has an ExpressCard slot, can't you just get a card to work in that?"

Yes I can.

What confuses me is the discussion about inserting a "SATA card" INSIDE the WWAN bay?  To what purpose?

Again, thank you for your patience!

Eureka!  Thank you!   I knew nothing about "mini-sata" cards.

And I thought I knew it all.  :-)  Not really.
