Does the 5g WWAN "Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5g" modem support eSIM?

2021-07-23, 13:56 PM

I'm a bit confused as I can't find it in the specs for the wwan modem. On my laptop with this card, in windows 10, I have an option in the cellular section that says manage eSIM profiles.

Basically windows 10 will allow me to put in an eSIM. I'm just not sure if that is there by default on all devices or only laptops that have eSIM capability.

Would anyone know if this Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5g wwan modem has eSIM capability?

Thanks

Yes, for an eSIM you either use the number if they emailed it you, or the QR code on the card they give you when you sign up.
USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

Hi Edward_USA, Yes it has eSIM functionality. On my X1C9 I see two SIM's in Windows 10 Cellular settings - SIM 1 and SIM 2. To make my AT&T LTE nano-SIM work I had to select SIM 1 from the dropdown. I only see eSIM mentioned when I select SIM 2. I don't have an eSIM card so can't test that. Let us know your experience!

Thanks, actually eSIM does not use any card but a number. Meaning, you could get Emailed to you an eSIM, which is just a number and you can type it into your computer and you will be connected.

I was reading where many cell carriers will not offer eSIM numbers for not popular eSIM cards or phones. They were saying something like the phone carrier needs to set up unique software on their end to be able to communicate with the eSIM phone or laptop.I'm not sure how this stuff all works as I thought an eSIM just spoofs the information that would be on a simcard. It seems that it may be difficult to get eSIM service for something like a lenovo laptop as its just not common enough for the carriers to setup their systems to communicate with it.

Well, I guess its not that big of a deal to just use a sim card.

1.  Yes it does support e-sim.

2.  BUT!  the wwan card supports e-sim means nothing, you have to get a file from your wireless carrier SM-DP server.  Many wireless carriers only support e-sim for very limited phone models. They don't support e-sim for laptops. So even your wwan card supports e-sim, you still cannot use e-sim.

Kind of true but I discovered on my laptop that on the cellular option in settings, they have a link to windows 10 app that lists providers that offer eSIM service for your laptop. So there are some carriers that are easily offering this right from a windows 10 app that links from your settings to easily find carriers anywhere in the world. Its a start at least. For example I saw a carrier I use internationally for my phone and they offer eSIM for my laptop for cheap prices. So its already convenient. In the USA they offer two carriers Ubigi and GigSky world mobile data from the app. They would give me instant eSIM support but a little more expensive then for shopping the cheapest carrier and getting a sim card. But they do offer this support if you want instant internet connection in the USA. I guess its just a matter of time now that many of the cellular carriers in the USA will join this app and offer eSIM support.
