Downgrading Pre-Installed Windows 10 Pro to Windows 7 Pro

2019-05-07, 1:14 AM

I just purchased a brand new Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Generation laptop.  It's being shipped and I should have it this week.

It comes with WIndows 10 Home preinstalled.

I want to install Windows 7 Pro (personal preference) before even using the computer.

What do I need to do to swap WIn 10 for WIn 7 Pro?  I presume , if needed,I can buy Windows 7 online with an install code.  Then what?

Thanks for any help you can provide.  BL

I assume you are getting a retail copy with a retail key, so activation should not be a problem.  Your SSD might be NVMe and there is no native support.  If you have a SATA SSD, there will be no problem installing, but there is usually a problem getting windows update to work,  You may need to do the following,

Microsoft has not done well with windows 7 updates. A fresh install of windows 7 requires a lot of things to be downloaded, and the update process works poorly for win7. You need to update the servicing stack and do an update rollup before windows update will run at all. If you were ever going to update to windows 10, now is the time.

Try this:

Update servicing stack: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=46817

Then apply this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53332

Then retry windows update.

If you have an NVMe disk, you also need to get an NVMe driver merged into your install media.  There are many descriptions available from google and they are all ugly.

I suggest keeping an image of your win 10 disk in case you cannot get win 7 to work.
