Drivers for Ricoh Media Card (SD card) reader on Carbon X1 not working

2013-01-11, 9:09 AM

Hi,

The SD card reader in my laptop is not working.

I have a Carbon X1 laptop (machine type 3443CT0) running a fresh install on Windows 7, 64-bit Ultimate edition. This is not the Win7 image that comes with the laptop, but rather a fresh installation of vanilla Windows 7 ultimate from a Microsoft DVD.

I installed all of the relavent drivers for this machine from Lenovo's drivers page:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT074689

Under the "Camera and Card Reader" category, I installed: Media Card Reader Driver for Windows 7, version 2.14.18.01, released Aug 13, 2012.

The installer seemed to finish successfully and asked for a laptop reboot.

However, the SD Card reader is still not working.

Under Device Manager, in the "Other devices" category, I see "Base System Device" listed with missing drivers. Under the details tab of that item, I choose "Hardware Ids" under property. The vendor ID is 1180 (for Ricoh) and the Device ID is E822. By searching the pcidatabase.com website (below), I found out that this is the "Ricoh PCIe SD/MMC Host Controller"

http://www.pcidatabase.com/vendor_details.php?id=1648

Are other people having problems with installing this driver? I also tried the Windows 8 64-bit driver, just in case and that is not working either.

The SD Card reader works under Linux, but not under Windows 7, so I'm pretty sure it's a device driver issue, not a hardware issue.

Any thoughts on what I can do to get around this?

Lenovo phone support was not much help!

FYI - to fix problem i had to do a manual install from Device Manager using the "have disk" feature. From that popup, pick the SD Reader, then Ricoh as the manufacturer, THEN click on Have Disk and choose the location for the extracted driver (C:\WIN\DRIVERS\MEDIA).

Good luck!

Maybe somebody with a Carbon X1 running Windows 7, can look for "Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller" under Device Manager and let me know which driver they are using... or better yet send me a link to download that driver file and I can use it on my system...hopefully.

Spent a long time at this, Windows 8 x64. Selecting SD Reader and then Have Disk continued to refuse to recognize the driver. Instead what worked for me was similar but after clicking Update Driver> Browse my momputer for driver software> Let me pick from a list, I had to leave "All Devices" selected and then clicked Have Disk, browsed to the C:\Drivers\WIN\multicard\driver folder. How that makes a difference I do not know but for me it did. Hope this helps, must be a rare problem as there wasn't much information to be found otherwise.

On my win 8 system, when  I go to Device Manager, I can't find SD Card Reader listed anywhere. therefore I can't click to manually update the driver. Can you tell me in more detail how you got to the place in Device manager to update the driver? My SD card isn't being recognized at all.

Hi,

I also had the problem that the SD card did not show up in Windows.

This worked for me:

open Device Manager,

click the "Scan for hardware changes" in the toolbar.

After doing this the "Ricoh SD Disk Device" showed up under the "Disk drives" node (it was not there before) and the SD card showed up in Explorer and worked.

I hope I do not have to repeat this each time I plug in an SD card.

BTW I am using the Lenovo pre-installed Windows 7 Pro.

best regards

Hi

I have Win 8 on my X1 Carbon and still trying to get the SD card reader to work. I can see

"Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller" under Storage contollers and I've tried updating  it with latest drivers but no success. Reboot the laptop various time as suggested in Lenovo troubleshooting but i can't get the reader to detect a SD card (8GB / 32GB).

Any suggestions to resolve this would be appreciated.
