Early life failures of Union Memory M2 SSD Drives in X380 Yogas

2019-04-22, 21:31 PM

So far, we have had 8, x380 Yogas with Union Memory branded M2 drives that failed in the first 2 to 3 weeks of their life. All of the user's data has been lost on all 8 of these machines. Any one else having this experience?

Sorry for this trouble.  Can you please post a picture of the label from one of these drives?  There are a couple different Union Memory drive models.

What I found out is that there's a known firmware bug which causes that drive (Union Memory AM6672) to fail.  The firmware update to fix this problem was released last week:  https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ch/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-X-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-X380-YOGA/downloads/DS119265

The firmware update will prevent this failure.  Now I'm asking whether it's possible to somehow apply this update to a drive that already failed.

Thanks for the quick response. We will start planning to get this update pushed out. It would also be great if the FW update fixes the failed drives and allows the drive to function again.

Unfortunately, the FW update can't fix a failed drive.

So glad I found this post, just had to go through our 2nd RMA for this fault from a batch of 10 we sold a customer, needless to say they were beginning to lose confidence in the product.

This should really be more widely known, I would have thought the support desk should have notes of issues like this to inform customers approriately.  As I've said, I've gone through 2 RMAs for failed drives in the past few months.  I even referenced the first RMA during the 2nd to bring attention to the fact this is developing a pattern, possibly indicating manufacturing fault, but agent seemed to know nothing about that.  Not to criticise the agent though, who was actually very friendly and helpful.

It looks like this continues to be an issue and I don't think the updates are getting pushed out. Furthermore, the release notes for the latest firmware version state that support for the AM6672 has been removed. I'm not sure what this means for those of us that have systems with these drives. Has Lenovo given up on trying to update them?

You said above that the firmware update won't fix a failed drive. Do you know if it will fix a *failing* drive?

Thanks,

Rick

I will check why the latest version of the FW update tool removed support for AM6672.  As far as I remember, the failure is corruption in the drive's metadata.  It has either "failed" or "not failed" and there is not any in-between state like "failing", at least for this particular issue that needed the firmware update.  What is the firmware verion on your drive currently?

I found out that the next version of the firmware tool will add support back for the AM6672, late Feb or March.  It was removed temporarily due to some problem.  Sorry for this trouble.
