Extreme X1 Gen 2 - Fan is always running when battery is being charged

2021-04-12, 21:54 PM

I have a brand new Thinkpad Extreme X1 Gen2 - It is a beautiful computer, the screen might be the best screnn I have ever seen. When I use it in battery mode it is completely noiseless most of the time. But as soon as I use it in AC mode the fan starts, in a low velocity but still, it never stops! No matter the CPU. I have downloaded every update, Windows and BIOS and I even went in the BIOS and changed the settings in the AC mode to "balanced" and "save battery" but nothing makes any difference. For my work I need complete silence and it is just not acceptable that this should be only possible when in battery mode (especially since the battery does not work for too long). Does anybody know this problem and also knows how to solve it? (I already asked in the German section but without success). Thanks!

Hello Sa-Bine,

Greetings

Is the BIOS version the latest one from the support site?

I suggest that you share the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help us detail more about your machine variant.

It would also help running diagnostics.

Dear Lorenzo, were these informations helpful? When I used the laptop for the first times (with an older BIOS version) the fans were not running in AC mode. Now they are, but in Battery mode they are almost never runnig, even if the energy setting is "high performance". This shows that this a bug that should be fixable, right?

Hi--I also have a X1 Extreme Gen 2 on BIOS 1.38 (N2OUJ20W), and the fans have run constantly on AC power with every BIOS update after 1.29 was installed, regardless of load. My device's MTM is 20QVCTO1WW. Hoping that providing my information here will further aid in finding a solution to this issue.

The BIOS version currently available on the support site are the certified version for the model.

As it may not be the same intensity with an older BIOS , I think you may have to check it with the repair facility to conduct further investigation as generally it is the TDP value the triggers how the fan would behave.

They would be able to conduct isolation and further mapping internally too.

Dear Lorenzo, thank you - so, you say not all computers of this model have this problem? Because I already exchanged my computer for another one and I am willing to send it to the repair service even though it is brand new, but I would like to be sure that the problem can indeed be solved if I send it in. Is it a known problem with a known solution? Best, Sa-Bine

Once you contact the tech support, they will probably provide some additional troubleshooting, and if they can't fix it over the phone, they'll be the ones to offer repair thru the machine's warranty.

@Lorenzo_Lenovo is that the offical response ?  Maybe you could also chime in in this thread as there are many more people facing the same fan problem (which appearantly can be pin pointed to a specific bios version): https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Extreme-Gen-2-Fan-Constantly-Runs-on-AC-Power-with-BIOS-1-29/m-p/5002495

Officially , the BIOS currently on the support site is the certified release that is intended to run in the machine.
If this firmware along with the options do now work for you then you can have it reported to the tech support team in your region as well as send your information and report it on the feedback hub from the support site so proper team would be notified.

Take care
