FRU Part but can I replace it myself?

2020-10-07, 15:34 PM

I have a X1 with a fan issue, I want them to just send a fan and no tech. I also dont want to mail it off. I just want to open it and replace the fan myself. Can they do that without voiding warranty? How do I go about asking for a parts only dispatch?

edit: x1 carbon gen 8 with depot warranty

Its just a fan issue since it makes a slight grinding noise when spinning. Thats it. If i have to mail the laptop out then ill just return it since i am in the return window. Fine by me..

There are MANY X1 machines (carbon, yoga, tablet, and others) in many generations.  Some are brand new and some date from 2012.  What kind of machine are you talking about?

There are 2 ways to request Lenovo services: make a phone call, or file a case online.

Based on my experiences, there is almost no chance to persuade any Lenovo service person over the phone to send you a replacement FRU. But if you file the case online, the chance is very high. I have requested many FRUs to replace them by myself.  Most cases Lenovo did not want old parts to be shipped back, they send to you by overnight shipping.  This is a type of warranty service, so will not void warranty.

Now the second part of your story---- in order to replace the fan assembly, you need to remove the mother board first. because part of the fan assembly is on the back side. You need to remove all harnesses, remove almost all screws. This is certainly not a simple task, do you have that ability?

You sure? I checked the HMM for the laptop and its just a couple screws and you take it off. Picture attached. @ujda765

The left side of the fan assembly is sit inside the base cover, the gap between the right edge and pcb is very tiny, it is difficult to lift without bent something.

It will come out fine after removing the bottom cover.  Having said that, I always hesitate before this kind of job on anything under warranty.  If the problem turns out to be  thermal sensor or a fuse, rather than the fan, the issue might become your problem.
