Factory reset of x140e

2016-10-19, 23:46 PM

Having ready through the forum, I just want to make sure I understand everything correct before resetting my Thinkpad. My pad came with Windows 7, but had windows 8 included on disks. I upgraded to Windows 10, but have found that it slows my computer way down, so I want to reset it to factory. Is there any difference if I use the recovery Q-drive through F11, or the included recovery disks? The computer does not have a disk drive so I would have to hook up an external drive. Is that possible when recovering?

To all you that know so much more than some of us, thank you for taking your time to answer our questions.

Hello and welcome,

Since your laptop came with Windows 7, F11 recovery should take it back to Windows 7 - but upgrading to '10 often kills the F11 recovery capability.  You won't know until you try.

You should be able to use the recovery DVDs on an external drive, but of course you'll end up with Windows 8.

One other thing to consider: a clean install of Windows 10. In my limited experience, upgrading to '10 "on top" of '7 can produce unsatisfactory performance.  That's what happened with my U260.  Doing a clean install made quite a difference.  YMMV.

I would suggest you perform a rest from within Windows 10 to see if this makes your laptop any more bearable. Additionally, Lenovo has also hosted a site where downgrade media can be ordered in case you do not have it..

Hope this helps,

Happy to discuss more.
