My x220 ips panel also suffers from ghosting, I now use brightness level 10 to minimize the effect.
If there are new panels without problems i'd like to swap mine..
How will this warranty/callback procedure work?
Should i wait for lenovo to post a message somewhere to ensure swift support?
TechSupport in NL told me to wait for a message in the thinkvantage toolbox... ![]()

Just a quick update for anyone who's thinking about sending in their laptop to the depot.
As I posted previously, I called Lenovo on September 6th, got a box on the 7th and sent it out the same day, and apparently it arrived at the depot on the 8th. And then... radio silence. I checked on the status this morning (now 11 days later) and there was none. So I called and discovered that the Lenovo/IBM depot is rolling out a new case-tracking database and apparently my laptop is currently in limbo. Until they get to it and assign it the right tracking number nobody can tell me anything. It's definitely a disappointment, but thankfully my old laptop is still hanging on, so I'm not hurting too much.
What are the chances that a) my laptop comes back with a non-ghosting screen and b) Lenovo "makes this right"?

All,
I've confirmed with service that the updated LCD FRUs are now in stock. We should be able to resolve ghosting issues for those that experience it on their system. The formal tip will be updated shortly.
Justin,
Can you PM me your case number and your system type / serial? I'll see what we can do to move things along...
Apologies for the delayed service!
Mark

Hi,
and the new LCD revision FRU is .... (if changed) ? How can we detect that if we buy a brand new X220 now we get the new fixed revision ? I'm waiting for such information several weeks since I don't want to buy something and have to replace it immediately. I can't imagine how to argue with a local service that I got the bad one and want to replace it with the good one if the FRU or other identifier is still the same for both revisions. Sorry, it does not make sense.
Thanks.

Hello Mark,
Thank you for the update.
I understand that you have been busy and did not have time to check the forum but there are several questions that we would like answered:
1) Can you please elaborate on the different specs between the old and the new panels? Is there any technical info?
2) Was it confirmed that the new panel is less susceptible to image retention than the old one?
3) If I were to order a new X220 now, how can I make sure that I get the new panel and not have to replace it?
Thank you,
Alex.

I'm very interested in the X220 with the IPS panel but the major issue currently holding me back from buying it is the unclear situation around those new panels. So I can only second what Alexo already said and would very much appreciate answers to those questions.

puppy, alex,
anything built since the first half of august has been shipping with the updated panel. mark explained this in an earlier post.
FRU numbers have not changed have not changed in the current revision but will change soon. the updated panels have an 1108 or newer date code as shown in the photo below. also note the "1 08" (2011 08) date code on LG's asset label.
i have one of the updated LCDs in my X220 and can confirm with absolute certainty that it does not retain images even at 100% brightness. my previous panels retained images so i know what to look for here.
(edit: typo, updated note on FRU number)

Yes, he did. He did not, however, mentioned anything about the units with the old panel being taken out of circulation or upgraded. He did not state categorically that every shipped unit will be one build after August.

I know that, therefore I asked for technical specs and not an FRU number.

It is good to know.
On the other hand, we have posts from siam and omEgA stating that their units exhibit the problem. I assume they got the old panel.

i don't know any details surrounding the cutoff/introduction or any existing units left over. given the delivery date, siam's system could have been shipped right before the change. omEgA didn't specify where he purchased—lenovo.com or through a reseller. however, either one would be eligible for an update if for some reason they received the old panel.
puppy asked about the FRU numbers. that detail was to address his question. i don't know what was changed in the panel design on that finite of a level.

Another question is whether the above applies to the US/Canada market only or worldwide. Because the availability of new models/configurations in Eastern Europe is always delayed.
In other words, I don't understand why there isn't a clear indication that the new revision of the panel is mounted by different FRU (because the component is supposed to be different, isn't it) or different machine model number or something else you can check in ThinkPad Configuration tool etc. It is common in consumer electronics industry that you can get a motherboard revision or firmware version of the product without disassembling it
