Fan Error on x220

2013-08-15, 18:41 PM

Hi everyone,

I have a (now) 2 year old Thinkpad X220 with Intel i7 processor (CTO 4286) with no warranty (only got the 1 year limited warranty, as I assumed this was a premium laptop).

Sadly enough a month ago the fan stopped working, and I get a "fan error" message on boot-up. This as, in effect, turned my +1200 dollar laopt quite useless.

What I have tried to fix it so far is the following (in this order)

1. Blown out dust from the fan area

2. vacuum cleaned fan area

3. Dissambled unit, vacuum cleaned fan unit

4. Applied small bit of oil to fan unit mechanism

5. Reapplied thermal paste to cooling unit

6. REPLACED fan unit and thermal paste

However, the message is still there and my laptop (which cost me an arm and a leg, as I was planning to use this laptop for 5 years - just like my x41 before it) .. is still dead.

Does anyone else had this problem (especially those that did not have the warranty anymore), and does anyone else has any other suggestion? Would much appreciate it, as I need this laptop and cannot afford a new one..

"fan error" does not mean "too hot"; it means "running too slow". You probably need need a new fan. (The only other things involved are the fan sensor and a fuse (both part of the motherboard). They are unlikely causes and expensive to fix.

Hi Richk,

Thanks for your answer. However, I already followed your recommendation and installed a new fan. Although it was not factory new, the reseller promised me it was a good quality working unit.

If the fuse is broken, will the whole motherboard need to be replaced? Because that is something i am really scared of, as it will practically mean I can just as well buy a new laptop.

When you turn the laptop on, do the fan blades move at all? If yes, it is likely that the fan you bought is bad. Very few repair places do fuses. You need good soldering equipment and some know-how, (quartz preheater and a good temperature-controlled rework station is the minimum) I don't even know where the fan fuse is on that model. I have never changed one on that board. It would require stripping off the plastic stickers and an examination just to figure out what fuse you need. I don't have an i7 board to offer you. The only x220 board I have is an i5-2520. I looked near the connector (the normal place) and I didn't see it. My board is a brand new one and I didn't want to pull off the all the plastic stickers, because they often get damaged. There is more circuitry involved in the fan process, but I have found the fuse is the most likely to fail.  I don't know what else I can tell you. Sorry

Hey Richk,

No problem at all, I really already appreciate all the info you have given me. I know a bit about computers, but I don't have the level of knowledge others have about this X220 laptop. Your info is very valuable..

The fan doesn't move at all, it just stays the same way when I turn on my laptop. The same was true for the last (original) fan, when I was first confronted with the issue. At first I just noticed the laptop becoming extremely hot, but when I blew in the air vents the fan would spin up. Then at some point it just stopped working, and the laptop gave me the "fan error" message.

When I contacted the repair service here in the Netherlands, they asked 100 euro just to examine it. That led me to order a fan online and try to fix it myself. But maybe I can corss my fingers and ask them to simply replace the fuse (if that would even be possible). I will let you know what their answer was.

But if anyone else has some hints or suggestions, please feel free to comment here..

In the US, Lenovo does no motherboard repairs. They just swap parts

Well I called the Lenovo people in Netherlands today, and they could not tell me if they can replace a fuse or not. The customer assistent could only take in the device, and look at it for 100 euro. Only after that they can tell me if they can fix the problem at all.

I also asked for a replacement motherboard, but the best alternative one they could offer me costs 1800 euro. Seems a bit high to me, as I could buy 3x the same laptop for that money (if I had the money).

So far Lenovo has really let me down with this, what I assumed to be, professional business grade laptop.

Anyone interested in a 1000+ euro costing black paperweight?

I will keep it in mind Richk, no problem. But first I want to see if the issue can somehow be fixed.

I checked my new fan using an external 5V power supply, and it worked flawlessly. So it really must be the motherboard which is giving me head aches.

I am going to sent it to a laptop repair company (NOT Lenovo, I don't trust this company anymore at all), to see if they can check the motherboard. If that doesn't work, I will think about what to do next with my 1000+ euro costing door stopper.

Another question for anyone out there:

Does anyone know how to file a complaint to Lenovo? Neither on the international site, nor on the Dutch site I can fine any information on how to do this. I read somewhere that I could call a sales agent and do it through them, but I prefer not to make an international call or call a sales agent based in Greece and speaking terrible Dutch (my apologies, Dutch is a horrible language to master!). I just like to have a (more formal) written file.

Thanks for the answer!
