Gen 9 X1 Carbon PCIe 4.0 or 3.0 M.2 SSD?

2021-10-23, 2:12 AM

I know that the datasheet for the Gen 9 states PCIe 4.0, but I can't seem to find any solid evidence if the latest X1 Carbon supports the full potential of PCIe 4.0 SSD's. The PSREF states that it has a PCIe Gen 4x4 slot, but I see some configurations are shipping with PCIe 3 drives. Does the X1 Gen 9 support the full speed potential of the newer PCIe 4 drives? Thanks.

I have used a X1 C9 with Gen 3 SSD, and a equivalent one with Gen 4 and it is noticeably quicker.

Thanks for that info. I guess what I really wanted to know is if there is any way to know if the machine you are purchasing will arrive with a PCIe Gen 3 or 4 drive, without knowing the serial number of the machine in advance.

From what I've seen, those with Gen 4 SSD will explicitly state that (while Gen 3 will have no designation.)  And if it's a stock model, you'll be able to look it up in the PSREF:

If the config says says the SSD is "PCIe 4.0" or "Performance", it is PCIe Gen 4. Otherwise it is Gen 3.
USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

Yeah, I tried that, but some stock models do not even show up in the PSREF. 20XW003FUS, for example. How would I know if this has a PCIe 3 or 4 drive?

Thanks, but where do I find the configuration of the machines? Every X1 Carbon Gen 9 on Lenovo's website simply states "XXX GB(TB) PCIe SSD"

The G9 I had shipped with a crappy 256GB PCIe 3 SSD, you can read my journey of correcting that and unleashing its full potential lol
