Got my new Extreme Gen2!! What do y'all want to know?

2019-08-31, 15:22 PM

So far it seems great--I can't believe I almost got a T490 thisis SO MUCH NICER :)

My specs: i79750H, 24G RAM(came w/ 8G), 256G SSD (stock--it's an Intel SSDPEKKF256G8L; I've added a second SSD in the spare slot); FHD Dolby screen (I don't have any need for 4K); Win Pro of course.

If you have questions, fire away and I'll do my best.

Just one question... Does your laptop thermal throttle?

1. What about thermal throttling?

2. What is max cpu temperature with Hyper V enabled in Windows?

3. What is max cpu core temeperature difference under full load? (you can check it with cinebench r20 + intel xtu)

4. Battery life

5. Cinebench R20 score without repaste and undervolt with AC power and best performance profile in Windows

Thanks!

1. FHD Dolby with 500nits .. how does it look?

2. Sound quality from speakers?

3. Any coil whine?

4. Fan noise and temperature under normal usage (not stress test)

5. Battery duration under normal usage

6. How heavy is charger?

7. Why did you get Win Pro? (why of course).

8. For normal usage (office apps, some development/simulation, watch netflix) -- any reason to undervolt, repaste?

9. Did cpu/gpu throttline happen? under what condition?

10. Sound quality from speakers

1. FHD Dolby with 500nits .. how does it look?

Excellent as far as I can tell.  I have it a couple of clicks down from max bright.  No dark pixels which I can find so far.  I have not tested on movies yet, nor have I tried anything w/ Dolby vision, whatever that is.  It's just a very nice, bright, matte, wide-color, FHD, screen.

I guess if you mostly watch movies or do high level engineering 4K might make sense but for normal use I can't see why anyone would go for anything over FHD on the laptop.  Just plug in a 4k monitor if it's that important.

2. Sound quality from speakers?

fine, I suppose?  Its a very personal issue.    Downfiring so very sensitve obviously to what you are doing, it will sound MUCH better on a table than on a lap, higher volume, better sound generally.  You certainly wouldn't want to use the laptop for sound genertion--you can get better sound from any Bluettooth speaker--but there was no audible hiss and at least functional volume for an aging not-great-hearing guy like me.  At medium volumes it's surpriingly good.  At high volumes and certain frequencies it can sound a little buzzy but, frankly, nobody would use this like a Sonos.

3. Any coil whine?

None I can hear under normal use. More importantly, none my kids can hear.

4. Fan noise and temperature under normal usage (not stress test)

By "normal use" do you mean what?  Certainly when just surfing and working in typical MS Office apps it's dead silent and reasonably cool.  On battery, it works fine fan-off and I'm using on lap w/ shorts.  When charging, like now, it gets uncomfortably hot w/ shorts but would be fine on a table or lap desk.

5. Battery duration under normal usage.

Don't know yet, you'll probably need to ask someone else.  I rarely need more than 2-3 hours at a time and certainly that isn't a problem.

6. How heavy is charger?

Judging from a comparison / a 4oz weight, I'd say 8oz +- 2oz.

7. Why did you get Win Pro? (why of course).

I like the features.  no "of course" for most folks.

8. For normal usage (office apps, some development/simulation, watch netflix) -- any reason to undervolt, repaste?

I can't imagine why.  When I play a video on youtube, the CPU package is not even drawing 5 watts and the GPU isn't even running.  Office apps and netflix should hardly make a modern procesor get out of bed.  "development simulation" may be different.

9. Did cpu/gpu throttline happen? under what condition?

Perhaps in Cinebench?  I have a lot of computer expeience but I don't really benchmark much, so I'm not precisely sure how to tell.

Erik .. Thank you so much. By "normal usage" i meant "not running benchmark, sustained cpu workloads". I am trying to understand what benefit I get with Win pro (for a home/school user). And what pains to I sign-up with Win 10 Home (do I loose control on frequency of updates pushed). Thank you so much for your generous and detailed responses.

1. What about thermal throttling?

Yes.

I watched what was going on in Throttlestop while running Cinebench (AC, max performance) not actually using TS for anything other than monitoring.)

In single core (SLOOOOOOOW) it appears to be constanly  rotating the thread through all the cores, for temp control.  package power climbs to ~35 watts, fan turns on but not on high; displayed CPU speed range appears to be from a low of ~4200 to a high of ~ 4365.  It ended up running in background for a while, as I was responidng here. Score 435. (Fan hardly turned on much.)

In multi core, no tweaking, all the temps rapidly climb to 80 degrees C.  Cinebench score 2120.

I am new at TS but I was curious, so I implemented -50.8 mv (to be safe) and ran cinebench again, multi core.  Score changed to 2245.  Core speed around 2900, never broke 3000.

2. What is max cpu temperature with Hyper V enabled in Windows?

Don't use Hyper-V, so don't know.

WinHome has 95% of WinPro, if you don't know you want t then you probably don't need it. It has no effect on updates.

2120pts in Cinebench R20 is preety low. X1E gen 1 with i5 8300h + little undervolt can hit 2100pts.

Check power profile in Windows 10, must be set to best performance.

gm20 ... interesting you have i5-8300H.

I am thinking of ordering i5-9300H (XE2).

My use case would be more productivity tools, netflix, games - unlikely, some development (python, R), large excel data, data visualization, GIS ... here there could be some 3D rendering but nothing at the speed of games.

Reason - I feel i5-9300H would be powerful enough (my current m/c is i5-6300U and feels sluggish) and  am hoping for  less issues with cooling, temperature, noise, and  better battery life?

Any drawbacks to i5 config? Should I just go for i7 (with 6 cores).
