Re:HELP PLEASE: Lenovo X270 black screeen, laptop turns ON, fan spinning and when SDD plugged to another laptop it asks for BitLocker key which I never ever set!

2021-02-21, 10:48 AM

Guys, don't you think it is an issue with the BIOS, and reflashing it will solve my case?

I've found some similar cases (not BitLocker but about the black screen, laptop turning ON, fan spinning) like here:

1- "after disabling intel graphic from the advanced option in bios of G500 the screen is black I tried other monitors but it doesn't show anything I removed battery of bios, RAM, Hard but still nothing even after removing RAM the CPU worked but the screen is black!"

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-B-and-G-Series-Notebooks/recover-bios-lenovo-G500-black-screen/m-p/1642158?page=1#1829623

2- "I have changed settings in bios to its default and got a black screen error, now the laptop is turning on, the fan is spinning, the hard drive is working but nothing displayed on the screen, only darkness, can u guys help? the laptop is brand new I got it from a European project. I tried to reset bios by holding the power button for 30 sec, after that laptop starts heard 1 beep and it's all, still darkness .. Connecting an external displayer still no luck"

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-L-R-and-SL-series-Laptops/Lenovo-Thinkpad-L540-Black-Screen-after-changing-bios-settings/m-p/2260684?page=1#2260684

Also, the question is how to flash BIOS if the screen is black?

Please help!!! I need my data or I am dead!

UPDATE:

Guys, you won't believe it, I could fix the first issue which was the black screen and the computer doesn't finishing the POST process.

I already tried before by changing the RAM memory but no luck, so yesterday I got like 10 different RAMs and finally, the laptop screen turned ON and I could go to the BIOS!

Now the issue is it is still asking me for BitLocker key (the system detected there was a HW change) which I am sorry to insist, I never ever set:

Please guys I have a 2-years non-profit documents on it otherwise these 2 years will be lost! :'(

A security feature wouldn't be much of a security feature if it could be easily bypassed. The only option you have is to wipe the drive and reinstall Windows. WIndows isn't supposed to enable Bitlocker without a Microsoft account to put the key in. Whatever Microsoft login was originally used to set up Windows when the computer was brand-new is where the key should be if Windows enabled it on its own.

Hopefully, you have a backup, somewhere.  A wise person once told me "any data that doesn't exist in at least three places ...doesn't exist." You should always be prepared for the worst possible scenario when dealing with computers. They do fail. Stuff such as your issue happens. Trust me, I've been through my fair share of meltdowns. So many, I keep all of my important data on thumb drives, NAS and in the cloud. Most of my computers are backed up weekly, including routine system images. Some of the more important machines have cloned system drives, too. Just a suggestion.

Hi Doc,

Well, I agree and I also always recommend people to have backups! I have 20 USB keys and a 4 TB HDD where I used to back up my data(also in Degoo/Google/email...), it just happened that I had too many things going on in my life lately I didn't do it! :/

Now regarding the security comment you said, we all know nothing is 100% safe and everything has a vulnerability, for instance, Windows password when logging could be easily removed with Hiren Boot CD.

I kept searching and found hundreds of people in the same case, who never installed BitLocker but it came because of a BIOS update.

So here my question: what about if I downgrade my laptop BIOS? Will I still have the BitLocker screen?

Actually it looks like it happened to this company:

PIN in Windows 7 and Bitlocker in Win 10 Pro are two entirely different things. Password access to an OS and hard drive encryption are on opposite ends of the security scale.

As for downgrading the BIOS, you can certainly try that as you have nothing to lose, but my understanding of the way Bitlocker is designed is so that, should someone steal your laptop and remove the hard drive, they won't be able to access its contents. As the drive, itself, is encrypted, shoving it into any computer, no matter the BIOS, will result in the same window asking for the same key.

You're just going to have to proceed as if your hard drive shorted out, destroying all of its data.  As I said, it's best to assume computer failure as a given and keep regular backups moving forward.

Well, I am sorry but I can't accept that. This is my laptop and my data, so I will fight and look everywhere until I find a solution.

By the way, I have contacted Microsoft and Lenovo many times.

Microsoft keeps telling me that if the key is not in my Microsoft account (or OneDrive, USB...) BitLocker cannot turn itself alone and I trust them as if that happened, I will have a key, I cannot forget that, I have a great memory when it comes to that (I remember +50 accounts passwords).

Lenovo keeps just telling me that BitLocker is a Microsoft product and they have nothing to do with it (which I am not really convinced, see below) and today this is what Microsoft suggested to me (see attached):

"Tell Lenovo that you never set up your BitLocker key from your Microsoft account and ask them if they can help you disable the Trusted Platform Module chip on your computer"

"A TPM chip is a secure encryption processor designed to perform cryptographic operations.
The integrated circuit includes several mechanisms that can be resistant to tampering, and malware is unable to falsify the security functions of the TPM."

Re:HELP PLEASE: Lenovo X270 asks for BitLocker key which I never set!

Hello,

This looks like it could be an issue from installing the KB4535680 hotfix for Microsoft Windows 10:  https://betanews.com/2021/02/16/kb4535680-update-bitlocker-problems-windows-10/

If this is the case, then I do not think there is anything that anyone at Lenovo can do, as any fixes for BitLocker will need to come from Microsoft.

Hi Aryeh!

WOW, finally someone brilliant who knows what's going on!

It's been 1 month now I cannot get no sleep because I don't have access to my data and I spent countless hours in forums, Youtube, discussing with Microsoft Support, calling Lenovo Support... no one knew about this and I was about to start to believe I am going nuts!

Sorry to ask, but do you know how we can bypass that Bitlocker recovery screen?

I read the article:

https://betanews.com/2021/02/16/kb4535680-update-bitlocker-problems-windows-10/

and this:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/security-update-for-secure-boot-dbx-january-12-2021-f08c6b00-a850-e595-6147-d0c32ead81e2

But don't see how to do it on my laptop.

Thanks a lot for your help!

P.S: FYI, Microsoft blaming Lenovo...

I have noted that bitlocker is supposed to save the key to the root of your onedrive or work account but it does not do that

so i have resorted to using a usb stick is not automated to recover but the key is there to manually type in

not sure why its enabled in the face of this known issue unless there is some company policy

Hello,

Unfortunately, I do not know what else to recommend here.  The problem is occurring on other brands of computers, so it does not seem to be a Lenovo-specific issue.  Perhaps there is some way to escalate the issue with Microsoft?
