HELP-my x120e is stuck on a boot loop - without reaching the bios logo

2011-11-11, 7:18 AM

Hi everyone,

I hope to explain clearly what my (BIG) problem with my x120e is.

Yesterday I noticed a strange behavior on my bios. I tried making some changes i.e.. Switching fn key with ctrl, enabling the usb charger, or AMD-V technology. With f10 I saved and restarted computer. CTRL-FN keys didn't change. I got back in bios and I saw that nothing was saved. I repeated the process, without success. No saves could be made. Than I turned off the computer.

After a few minutes, I wanted to turn on the computer, but, here comes the big problem. The computer do not boot up. After pressing the power button the computer starts (I hear the fan noise, and green led on the power button) but, after 6 seconds, without reaching the bios logo it restarts, and this goes on and on until I shut it down keeping the power button pressed. :smileysad:

What I tried after searching the forums was:

1. Removing the battery, keeping the power button for 60 (and 30) seconds pressed. Reconnect the battery. NOTHING

2. I removed the system memory, put them back. Trying to start. NOTHING

The netbook is 1 month old. This is very frustrating.

Can anyone help me with this? I live in Albania, no Lenovo support center here.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I had a motherboard replacement from lenovo international warranty service in Albania.

Thanks to everybody that helped with this.

Well, have you tried disconnecting the BIOS battery?  From what I remember, the cable itself should be fairly accessible after you remove the bottom panel.  That should clear out the NVRAM, and if that's the only problem, you should be golden.  If not, I'm fairly sure that there's something else that's gone bad, and hopefully someone in this forum knows more about where you can send it in for repairs.

@wildone81

Hi, thank you for your reply. I tried your suggestion, unfortunately it doesn't help. That "boot-loop" continues.

Hello,

You may need to disconnect the BIOS backup battery, main battery and the AC power, then let the unit sit without power for a while (15-30 minutes).  Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, let go, and repeat three times.  This allows all power to be drained from the non-volatile CMOS memory that contains the BIOS settings.  Then plug the AC adapter in and try powering up the system, at which point it should power up and tell you there is an error with the BIOS settings.  Unplug the AC adapter, reinstall the BIOS and main batteries, and plug the AC power into the X120e.

At this point, you should be able to power up, reload the BIOS settings to their default values and use the system as normal.

Regards,

@goretsky I followed your directions twice. At the point where I connect the ac power adapter the computer automaticaly boots up, but do not get at the bios logo, it continues to reboot constantly. So this solution is not working for me. :-( Any other ideas?

I just tried removing the system memory, HDD and starting my computer with putting the components one by one.

No success. :smileysad:

Does anybody have any other idea what is happening?

Honestly, it sounds like something managed to fry itself at this point. What it would be is beyond me, but I'd say you'll have to send it somewhere to get it fixed by now.

I'ts strange that starting the computer without system memory, stays on, although not geting at the bios logo, only black screen fan and hdd on. too, it beeps, indicating that memory is missing.

Starting without memory would typically cause the BIOS to print something to that effect, along with a bunch of beeping sounds.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried connecting a monitor to it? For all I know, a cable might have gotten loose, thus disrupting output to the laptop screen. I don't think the screen backlight would power on without some signal, but I haven't tried to figure out if having the output redirected on start would cause anything like what you're getting.
