Help with Touchpad

2010-04-14, 15:59 PM

The touchpad on my new X301 appears to be far superior to my older X300.  I see that a Synaptics driver is used for the touchpad, while the X300 uses an Alps driver.  I am guessing that Lenovo has figured out that Synaptics knows how to do touchpads and Alps does not.  Can anyone verify my suspicion?  Does anyone know whether I can take the excellent Synaptics driver from the X301 (Synaptics 14.0.16.0) and use it on my X300 to replace the horrible X300  driver (Alps 7.0.1602.5)?

I don't think it's likely you can use an Alps touchpad with a Synaptics driver, because there doesn't seem to be a standard driver interface for these that's strictly adhered AFAICT.  You're not alone:

Jay,

Thanks for the link.  Seems like everyone but Alps knows that Alps sucks.  It couldn't be that difficult for Alps or Lenovo to provide a decent driver for the X300/Alps touchpad.  I wonder how difficult it would be to remove the Alps touchpad from the X300 and replace it with the Synaptics touchpad from the X301.  It's probably close to brain surgery.  I have done it on a Sony Vaio, but that was not easy.  I will check to see if there is an upgraded X300 touchpad driver, as I have been doing off and on for the past year and a half.  At least my X301 has a Synaptics touchpad.

Update on X300 touchpad.  There is a new driver for the X300 Alps touchpad (Version 7.202.1616.206).  It seems to be a big improvement: I can now scroll in Photoshop and Access where the old driver would not.  It is not as good as the Synaptics touchpad/driver on the X301 (e.g. no "palm sensitivity" settings, movement not as smooth, ??), but it is better than what I had before.  I will post again if I find any problems or other news.
