Hibernation stopped working XP pro Thinkpad x23

2009-08-21, 5:02 AM

I've been using XP's Hibernation on my thinkpad for a number of years and for some reason it has stopped working.

I liked this facility becasue it allowed me to shut down and restart my system quite rapidly.

When I put the cumputer into hibernation, it goes through the process of saving a hiberfil.sys file and shutting down the system. (well at least it looks like its creating a hiberfil.sys file.

When I reboot, the computer boots normally meaning that it doesn't boot into its prehibernated state.

I've searched the hard drive for the hiberfil.sys file but I have failed to find it; not even in the hidden files.

I've reset my bios to its default settings and I have updated and reinstalled my video driver and  power management drivers taken from the Lenovo site. This did not cure the problem.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated

Hi Candive,

You might try using Fn-F3 / PowerManager or the Windows CP to delete, then re-create the hibernation file (disable, then re-enable hibernation).

Good luck,

Frank

Hi Frank,

As suggested, I turned off hibernation and I also made my page file zero. Restarted my machine, defragged my hard drive and then turned hibernation and page file back on.

unfortunately this did not resolve the issue. It's a real strange one becasue the system goes throgout the process of creating the hibernation file and shuts down. When I reboot, the system just boots normally.

i wonder if it has something to do with my virus program? I recently changed from Avast to Avira.

That's a weird one!

Have you changed your drive's partitioning recently? The hibernation file must be on the boot partition (C:). Windows should have taken care of that when you deleted and re-created the hibernation file, though.

You're smart to be thinking of things you've changed recently. You might try removing Avira temporarily and see if hibernation starts working...

Maybe someone else will have some ideas!

Good Luck,

-Frank

Hi Frank,

No I didn't change the partition but this could have been a result of a recent registry clean. What I did was reinstall a back up of the system I had which resolved the problem. Its too bad I couldn't find the missing link. Thanks for all your help.

I'm tempted to think that automated registry cleaners (if that's what you used) cause more problems than they solve. I've used one before myself, and found it helpful in removing some leftover cruft that I thought was causing trouble. But then I read many other people's reports of damage caused by registry cleaners, and decided not to risk using it anymore.

Glad to hear that you had a good backup, and that restoring from it resolved your problem. :smileyhappy:

Best regards,

Frank
