Re: How many external monitors can X1 Carbon connect to without dock?

Hi kennykenny,

Without a docking station, X1 Carbon (5th Gen) can connect to 3 external monitor without a dock. 2 external monitor connect via 2 USB-C port and 1 external monitor connect via 1 HDMI port.

Refer to X1 Carbon Platform Specifications for more information.

Re: How many external monitors can X1 Carbon connect to without dock?

Hi PeterTWJ,

Thank you for your reply. Is USB-C port same as thunderbolt 3? If I were correct, one of the thunderbolt 3 is used to connect to the power adapter, which means in this case, 2 external displays can be connected via thunderbolt 3 and HDMI when power adapter is needed?

Sorry I am not quite up to date for the latest tech, still using my old x230 when typing this. Much apprecaited Smiley Happy

Re: How many external monitors can X1 Carbon connect to without dock?

Hi Kenny,

Sorry for the late reply. USB-C 3.1 port Gen 2 is the same as Thunderbolt 3 port. Some of the external display only requires 1 cable to deliver both power, data and display as newer LED require less power to work.

Re: How many external monitors can X1 Carbon connect to without dock?

I'm trying to connect two HP 23er monitors to the laptop at the same time.  One is connected HDMI/HDMI and the other is USB-C/HDMI.  They both work fine individually (indicating there are no issues with the cables or monitors), but when they are both connected at the same time, one of them will go blank and indicate that there is no input signal.  Unplugging the one that is working immediately brings the other one back up.  Any advise?

Also, is there any way to close the laptop while still operating and only use the the two external monitors?
