How to turn off Thinkpad x301 display when using external monitor with USB Port Replicator

2009-05-19, 15:41 PM

Preparing boss' new x301.

He does not want an external keyboard, but he does want an external monitor.

X301 came only with an enhanced USB Port Replicator (he's used to a docking station but Lenovo does not offer one for the X301).

So far I cannot find any way to turn the x301 display off while keeping the laptop open for keyboard use while using an external monitor.  He's going to raise bloody hell if I cannot find a way to do this.

The "Lenovo Display Adaptor" in the system tray doesn't have such an option, and it seems neither does the Power Management.

FN F7 makes the screen flicker for one second, but does nothing further.

Thank you so much. for any help.

Looking for the same resolution, please let me know if you find anything.

I'd love to find an actual docking station for the X301 but haven't come across one yet.

thanks!

right click on desktop - persoonalization - display settings - untick both "this is my main monitor" and "extend the desktop onto this monitor" for the screen corrensponding to x301, and tick both of those options corrensponding to external display. x301 should power off and only the external screen should be working

cheers!

Thanks, but those options you said to untick are grayed out.  Can't uncheck them, can't do anything with them. :(

That is exactly the kind of setup im runing right now. If both of the options are greyd out that means, that you didnt not select option to extend monitor to the other screen (in your case I would assume that this is the external one). That happens because you cannot have 0 monitors on the system, one or the other has to be working. So what you need to do is to switch to another monitor, check "extend" option in there, that should enbale option to make it primary as well, check that too, then go back to your previous monitor and uncheck both ticks for the notebook screen. That should do the job.

Thanks Elvair, but nothing seems to be working.  When I untick then say apply, the laptop reapplies the ticks each time.  Ridiculous.

When I bypass the USB "port replicator", all is well.

Which leads me to conclude that Lenovo's port replicator is a POS.  It's basically just a giant USB hub that doesn't work correctly with monitors.

What a waste of time and money.

I'm  bit puzzled, I would check  things :

1) Have you installed the drivers correctly for the port replicator? If yes, try doing that again

2) Try connecting monitor directly to machine bypassing port replicator and see how it behaves

I agree with studiopeg, it seems like the mini-dock is just a USB hub - that's all I'm using it for now because the video is giving me too many problems.

If you're using the mini-dock with built-in VGA, why would you bypass and connect directly to the laptop? Doesn't make sense to me...

Is there any type of docking station that the X301 could use instead? Lenovo brand or not, it would be very helpful

Thanks!

Have you tried installing the latest version of Presentation Director and configuring it? If it supports the USB port rep properly, it should be able to handle that for you...

We don't allow Presentation Director on our laptops.
