How to upgrade to latest Windows 10 from X1 Carbon from Windows 10 2015 LTSB ?

2019-12-11, 11:43 AM

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Ultrabook bought in 2015 TYPE 20AZ-CTO1WW

and I try to update Windows 10 but it seems stuck with 2015 LTSB version.

I need to install a Microsoft software (Visual Studio 2019) that needs at least Windows 10 1703 a.k.a 10.0.1.15063 as explained here:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/releases/2019/system-requirements

How can I upgrade my X1 Carbon? I really hope I don't have to re-install everything.

Thanks

Hi PatLenovo! Welcome to our forums community. I am having trouble checking the model of your device but base on the information you've provided, it is near to: X1 Carbon 2nd Gen (Type 20A7, 20A8). For this model, it is tested to be compatible up to Windows 10 Update July 2016 / Version 1607 "Anniversary Update". You can refer to this link: https://support.lenovo.com/pa/en/solutions/ht501286. However, you can still manually update your machine but you might be having issues in the future.

You can manually update by going to Settings -->Update and Security --> Windows Update --> Select Check for updates.

Regards

Ok thanks, unfortunatly

Settings -->Update and Security --> Windows Update --> Select Check for updates.

tells me that my Windows installation is up-to-date.

Hence my question is:

Can I update from Wnd10 2015 LTSB version to a Wnd10 version equals or upper to 1703?

You can try the following. Go to https://heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-and-office-iso-download-tool

Find the version of Windows 10 you want. Download the .iso and either burn a DVD or mount the .iso using a program like Virtual Clone Drive. Run the Install program from the .iso and you should be set. Besides making a restore point I'd be sure you have your WIN 10 keys.

Thanks, I guess there are changes that i'd have to re-install everything isn't it?

I though Windows 10 would be always uptodate :((

Hi PatLenovo,

The whole point of Windows 10 LTSB is that it DOESN"T automatically upgrade. Upgrades are only published every 2-3 years and then you have to manually upgrade. You do get security and reliability updates though. It's meant for special applications which must remain stable, like medical machines.

To get that X1 Carbon on a standard release, you need to buy Windows 10.

How have you ended up with a system with Windows 10 LTSB (now called LTSC)? Everything I've seen states it is a volume-licensed Windows 10 Enterprise option.

Hope this helps!

I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

I've never re-installed this machine, Lenovo delivered it to me this way, I have so many professional development programs installed that it takes me more than a day to re-install everything :/

Thanks

If I remember correctly, you will be given the option to upgrade.

How this will happen?

When you run the Install program from the .iso file you should be given choices and upgrade is one. You may also find that by right-clicking the downloaded .iso file you can choose "Mount" and do not need a program like clone drive.
