Incorrect webcam?

2011-09-10, 23:23 PM

Hey all

Maybe it's just me being a newbie, but my X220 (4286-CTO) which I ordered with the 720p webcam only appears to be capable of doing 640x480...

I've mainly just used Skype and the ThinkVantage Diagnostics for troubleshooting it. (and some of those crummy Flash webcam apps, but those hardly count)

Details below:

Product Version: 6.0.5849.23

Integrated Camera
Device Locator: USB\VID_04F2&PID_B217&MI_00\7&3136D04&0&0000
Driver Information
Driver Provider: Ricoh
Driver Version: 1.1.0.1141, 23/12/2010
Driver: C:\Windows\system32\5U877.dll
Device driver identifier: {17CCA71B-ECD7-11D0-B908-00A0C9223196}

Integrated Camera Driver Installer Package Ver.1.1.0.1141

  Publisher RICOH
  Version 1.1.0.1141
Integrated Camera TWAIN
  Publisher Chicony Electronics Co.,Ltd.
  Version 1.0.11.1223

Figured I'd check in here before bugging Lenovo Support and putting a ding in my warranty.

ThinkVantage thinks all my drivers are up to date, and I definitely paid for the 720p camera as per my receipt, so...

Any ideas?

if you have ThinkVantage Communications Utility installed pressing FN + F6 will bring up the cam settings & at the bottum left is advance cam settings http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-53285

I dont really use the camera, but I tried with VLC and I cannot even see an option to adjust the resolution, but the windows is very small, if it was 720p it would fill my screen.

Yes, there does appear to be a setting in the ThinkVantage Communication utility for 1280x720, but that's only to take a photo. And it's of horrible quality, very pixelated. There are no options for video resolution settings anywhere, and when I record a video using Windows Live Movie Maker or VLC the video is 640x360.

Are you able to record 1280x720 video? I can't manage to do it in any app.

Just in the Communication utility I can take a bad quality 1280x720 photo which looks like its upscaled from 640x480.

The picture of the camera is not too bad (and works quite well in dark environement) but yes it has definitely a "cheap cmos sensor" interpolated look.

Don't expect "true" 720p :)

Maybe we can only take picture in *720p* ?

I think skype use 640x480 with the x220 because my MS 640x480 webcam is a bit better

If they are specifically selling and describing it as a 720p camera, to me that describes 720p video capability.

Can someone from Lenovo comment on the actual video capability of the x220 camera?

Re: Incorrect webcam?

In VLC :

Go to "Open Capture Device", select the webcam in "Video device name", and then, in "Advanced options" button :

"Video size" : 1280x720

"Picture aspect-ratio" : 16:9

The PQ will look like in "take snapshop" in the lenovo tool.

Still look interpolated but looks like "720p"

But yes in Windows Movie Maker or Skype we can not select resolution.

Re: Incorrect webcam?

Yeah that worked, but inputting the video resolution manually is hardly the solution, and like you said you cannot select the resolution in other programs. I have a feeling the scaling trick in VLC is done by VLC, not the camera driver, since there are no resolution options in it.

I mainly got the camera option to improve resale value in the future, as most people will probably not want to buy a laptop without one.
