Install Windows on 512GB mSata SSD drive on Thinkpad X220

Hi

I installed an mSata SSD drive (Kingston SKC600MS512G) in my Thinkpad X220. It is listed in Windows Device Manager under Hard Drives along with my HDD on which Windows is currently installed. I thought I can use diskmgmt.msc to initialize the mSata drive, but in the Disk Management Tool I can only see my HDD (C:) and no other drive or partition.

In the end I want to use the mSata SSD drive to install windows on it or at least use it as an additional partition. During a clean windows install only the HDD drive is listed, so I am not able to install the OS on the mSata drive.

Someone suggested to update the BIOS. My BIOS Version is 1.46, which I think is the most recent version. Any suggestions what I can do?

Re:Install Windows on 512GB mSata SSD drive on Thinkpad X220

Hi

Dis-connect the HDD and re-install windows only on the new SSD.

The boot manager and boot loader may need to be re-arranged.

Then add the HDD and ask again as necessary.

If in doubt please ask.

I cannot install on the SSD because it is not recognized during installation process. I tried to disconnect the HDD and install windows, but it won't allow me, because I cannot chose a drive to install windows on. Only after windows is installed I can see the SSD in the device manager (with no updates for its driver).

AAaaahhhhhhhhh

Sorry.

Then you may need extra drivers for that device from the makers website.

How would I install the driver before the installation of the OS so that the drive is recognized during installation?

Hi

Dunno.

What I do is to have a USB with Windows 10 installer on, and add a DIRECTORY/FOLDER called

HP_drvr  and one called LENdrvr and put in all the drivers I want.

X:\>dir
Volume in drive X is RECOVERY
 Volume Serial Number is 66F3-66A9

 Directory of X:\

25/08/2016  03:39            68,096 UNZIP.EXE

(It covers old and new laptop's --- zip's just in case)

Usually W10 asks for drivers early on in the process.

Hopefully this helps ....

Hi

maybe this

https://www.kingston.com/unitedkingdom/en/support/technical/ssdmanager

could be installed prior to removing the existing HDD?

Thx, but that didn't help. The Kingston SSD Manager doesn't find any hardware. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any driver. Windows also couldn't find any updates for the existing driver.
