Installing msata ssd in X230 voids warranty?

Hi,

the guy at my local campus store told me that installing an msata ssd into an X230 myself would, of course, void my warranty. Is this really true? Many people seem to install it themselves, and the ssd is indeed a CRU for the X220. On the other hand, according to the X230 Hardware Maintainance Manual, this no longer seems to be the case ...

Hey there strave,

If the HMM says the part is a FRU, then replacing the part on your own, will in fact, void your warranty.

Page 47.

The hardrive (parts 11-13) is a CRU.

So you can replace at will.

Also the memory is a CRU (parts 14-15), so you can replace that yourself.

i.e. for anyone planning on buying a x230, buy the worst HD and memory you can then upgrade yourself, and you'll keep your warrenty.

please look one page up in the HMM.

the mSATA SSD (item #4), being discussed in this thread, is neither a self-service or optional-service CRU. therefore, technically, messing around with it is a warranty-voiding activity.

hth to clarify.

Re: Installing msata ssd in X230 voids warranty?

Hi,

i am interessted in giving my x230 msata ssd. How can I do that as it is not a self-service or optional-service CRU. And the other question is: is it ok to put an OS into this disk?

Regards

The service manual explains how to install the mSATA In the WWAN slot under the palmrest - a fairly easy job requiring only a cross point screwdriver.

Remove your current hdd so that the mSATA is the only drive and install your OS. You can then reinstall your existing drive and change the drive letter.

Re: Installing msata ssd in X230 voids warranty?

While this is marked as solved, I have to reiterate that this is a very disappointing decision on the part of Lenovo.  I am actually looking to get an X230 before the end of the week and was planning on doing an mSATA upgrade when it came in instead of replacing the HDD.

Has anyone ever gotten an answer as to why this decision was made?
