Is it worth getting an old used X series laptop?

2021-07-28, 15:34 PM

Currently I use a 7 year Samsung RC530 laptop to browse internet, code and play games, however nowadays feels heavy, clunky and some parts like touchpad and some usb ports are damaged. My intention is to replace this laptop with two: a desktop PC (windows) to play and a laptop (linux) to browse internet, write documents, code and other things to do while traveling.

Currently in my work I use a Thinkapd E540 and I'm quite satisfied with its performance and keyboard, so I've decided my next personal laptop would be a Thinkapd. After gathering information I think the X2 series suit my needs.

I have seen that versions from X220 to 240 are very popular here, and I think I could get one used by a good price. However, I would like to know your opinion, should I get an used X220-240 or a recent X2 series, if the recent flaws are tolerable?

Welcome to the community forum.

Based on your intended usage a used X220-X240 should work well. I would recommend that you check that the unit has (1) at least 8GB RAM, (2) an SSD and (3) a battery that still holds enough charge for your intended usage. Otherwise the cost of making these upgrades may make it uneconomical.

You might also want to review this website and YouTube channel. There are several articles and videos about practical experience with these models.

I would advise against the X220 as Intel 2nd gen was not officially supported by Windows 10.  If you can stretch your budget a little, I can personally recommend the X1 Carbon Gen 3 (Intel 5th gen, my GF still uses it, and I keep it updated), perfect size and weight, solid reliability, and performance is still respectable today, if you get one with PCIe SSD and 16GB.

Hello,

You might want to consider a ThinkPad X280, as that has an eighth generation Intel processor, which will be required for future versions of Windows.
