Re:Latest Intel Graphics Driver Makes Display Dim

Hi Lenovo!

This is a friendly reminder that about 6 months and 15 forum pages has been passed since the first report appeared about a brightness issue with some Lenovo high-nits displays and the latest WU-pushed and then Lenovo officially released Intel VGA drivers.

So, will be ever a fix about this? Or our flashgip 500-nits displays would be now a 400-nits instead?

It is a 'feature update' in order to improve battery life or so?

Do we need to request a refund?

Please Lenovo, clarify.

Thanks.

I confirm too that the new driver (.8587) does NOT resolve the max brightness issue! Driver .7529 is still the only one with which I can have max brightness. I switched between these two versions (.8587 and .7529) several times and the difference in max brightness is noticeable.

It is funny that in the changelog of the new driver (.8587) is reported that: "Fixed an issue where maximum brightness decreases."

I just want to make sure that people don't think this is hardware. It's definitely software. Two ways to verify:

  1. Rolling back the driver to a previous (working) version fixes the issue, but introduces potential security issues which is why we want Lenovo to create a new fixed version of the driver.
  2. Dual-booting to another OS (such as Linux) where the open source drivers aren't affected by the dim screen problem makes it very evident this is software, not hardware.

There is no such display dim problem for X1 Yoga gen 5, X1 Carbon Gen 8 and X1 Extreme gen 3.

The dim problem is only associated with Intel UHD 620 and BOE LCD panel, which include X1 Carbon gen 7, X1 yoga gen 4, X1 Extreme Gen 2.

All either older, or newer lenovo laptops, are immuned.

I think this is more like a hardware issue, rather than a software issue.

Let me tell you something funny:

The 'new' X1 Extreme Gen3 have a 600-nits screen.

They use the same Intel driver, so, maybe, a lot of reviewers will going to receive a test unit and they will check that the screen is too dim.

LOL.

It is very easy to reproduce the problem. Just switch between these two driver versions: 8587 (the last one) and 7529 (the working one). The difference in max brightness is noticeable. I cannot understand why Lenovo software engineers do not see it. BTW I believe that this problem affects only the 4K IPS screen.

@pan07 This problem is not exclusive to the 4k screen. I have the 1080p 500-nit panel and I have the same problem.

The release note says

[Problem fixes]

 - Fixed an issue where dragging app interface was not smooth under external   monitor only mode when plugging the monitor for the first time.

- Fixed an issue where maximum brightness decreases.

Sadly, I’m experiencing those two issues

This update resolves nothing but version number.

What should we do? Just wait for Months?

Re:Latest Intel Graphics Driver Makes Display Dim

This has been very disheartening.  I have X1E Gen2 with the 4k OLED panel...kind of a shame not to be able to use the display to its full potential. It used to be, before driver was broken, that having this brightness turned up would be bright enough to hurt my eyes...in a good way though because I could turn it pretty far down and have lots of room to play with if I needed to turn it up. Now even at night I probably have it around 75% or so.

I was hoping 8587 that was released a few days ago would fix the issue, but im getting message that device failed to start after installation.  So I rolled back to 8190 that I had.  Not that it matters anyway, since I'm seeing others say 8587 hasn't fixed the problem.  Does anyone happen to still have access to version 7529, or know where where I'd be able to find it?  If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.  Thanks.
