Lenovo Dynamic Power Reduction Utility - Fibocom L850-GL Problem

2021-01-26, 18:03 PM

Hello,

My company has around 100x Lenovo 7th Gen x1 Carbon's (20QE) with the FIBOCOM L850-GL installed.  Some have SIMs installed, some do not.

We have noticed that, when reading through 'CrowdStrike Falcon logs' (A log collection tool) on these systems, that the LENOVO.DPRSRV service is calling 'FIBOCOM_MT_V1.0.7.1.exe' to execute every 6 -> 20 -> 50 seconds.  This is occurring on X1 Carbons that are not currently using/connected to a network using the FIBOCOM service.

We have also noticed that on these laptops which have working SIM cards installed, but NOT connected to the service, the 'FIBOCOM_MT_V1.0.7.1.exe' is causing a disconnect from the VPN network when it's executed.

My question is why?  I understand that the Dynamic Power Reduction Utility (LENOVO.DPRSRV) is there to manage power levels to 2/3/4G radios, however, what is the LENOVO.DPRSRV calling 'FIBOCOM_MT_V1.0.7.1.exe' when:

a)  The fibocom device isn't connected to a network

b)  The fibocom device doesn't have a SIM inserted to even make a connection with...

c)  Happening so frequently?

I am tempted to simply disable the service/uninstall the software since it seems like all it's doing is managing outbound power levels (assuming an attempt to save battery life?).  I would like someone from Lenovo who is knowledgeable about the topic to reply.

For the systems you don't want to connect to a cellular network...another thing you may be able to do is simply disable the device in BIOS settings...(I *think* there should be a setting there for it). If you do, it should "vanish" (from an OS perspective) as a device, and then nothing should use it.

Just remember that someone did that if later you do want to activate the cellular radio....otherwise, it won't even show up in device manager, and someone could think they have a broken machine when they don't....

In the BIOS, the setting is under security/I-O Port access.

I considered this, and this is the reason we did not want to take this route.
