Lenovo Think Pad x230 and Additional RJ45 port or mini express ethernet card into msata slot

2014-01-03, 18:29 PM

Mici-Express.JPG         Mici-Express2.JPG

Hi Guys,

I do not suppose anyone could help me  with having additional RJ45 port on my x230 thinkpad laptop?

Currently, x230 thinkpad comes with 1 RJ45 port with chipset "" Intel 82579 LM "". This card works great wit hthe vib driver downloaded and modified with Vmware Esxi iso. No issue there.

My currently barrier is that, I need additonal  RJ45 port and I've been searching for weeks for another RJ45 pcm/cia of same chipset or USB ethernet adapter again with same or similar chipset or exploring the msata slot option via the motherboard of the x230 thinkpad ?

Update findings:

The msata slot on x230 appears to accept and complies with mini express ethernet card like these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313&_nkw=mini+express+ethernet+card&_sacat=0&_from=R40

I also have came across an intel chipset type of the same product:

Question(s)

- Has anyone carried out installing any of these cards on the x230 laptop ? if yes, how did you go about accessing the port to RJ45 cable ?

- Has anyone installed any brand of ethernet card be it usb or pcmcia successfully on x230 for use with Vmware or Xenserver, if yes, what is the brand and or model, and possible driver link like tgz or vib

- Could technical Lenovo engineers test or advice whether or what mini express ethernet card is compatible with e msata slot onboard x230?

I have 4 X x230 laptop i.e. 3 Thinkpad and 1 Tablet currently running ESXi 5.5 but with only 1 NIC onboard, my infrastructure in terms of NFS / iSCSI share over cluster is too congested that some luns simply just falls off with several nagging errors.

Any help towards securing any workable type of recognised Vmware or Xenserver RJ45 network card will be very much appreciated.

On a side note: If those familiar with virtualisation on a laptop has design ideas on optimisation i.e. running shared storage  like NFS ./ iscsi whilst running  VMs simultanously could suggests some tips will equally be remebered.

Thanks guys

Hello,

I do not have an X230 myself, but with an X220 I would imagine using an adapter like this would mean keeping the ThinkPad is a partially-disassembled state for the MiniPCIe card to be available.

Have you considered using a dock with NIC or a USB 3.0 to GbE Ethernet adapter, instead?  That would probably be less "messy" than keeping the ThinkPads open.  It would also ensure the innards were less exposed to environmental contamination, curious users, etc.

I would think that the BIOS whitelist would prevent you from using such mPCIe cards in the ThinkPad. Also, Lenovo engineers wouldn't do tests for individual customers, as that would cost too much.

Hi,

I haven't tested this myself, but The Google comes up with quite a few hits for the StarTech USB 3.0/GigE adapter:

StarTech USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet NIC Network Adapter

Looks like most users are going to the chip manufacturer's site to get a working Linux driver.  Per one reviewer:  "Search for AX88179 on asix.com.tw under Support > Download > Drivers"

FWIW,

Z.

Thanks for the replay,

Just curious, has anyone ever used the docking station RJ45 port independently to the RJ45 port of the laptop ?

I was under the impression that once the laptop has been docked on the docking station you can only use one at any one time and not the two simultanously, please verify ?

Thanks for your help.

Dock's Ethernet port is a pass through port. So what you want to do won't be possible with the X230.

Hi again zoltanthegypsy, and thanks for all your candid help.

I'm currently liason with the support guys of the sellers of links below of the Intel 82574L mini pic-e gigabit card, hopefully to slot into the msata slot on the motherboard.

MPX-574D2 - Mini-PCI Express Dual Gigabit Ethernet Module

Hopefully I'll be able to tidy up the rj45 adapater aspect of the additional NIC card on the x230 laptop.

The good news here is that the intel chipset is compatible with vsphere ESXi

Question for the lenovo guys:

Could they please advise which ethernet pci-e mini card brand, the msata slot' on board the motherboard is compatible with ?

Could they clarify the link below under the ( MiniPCI Express slot 1 with zero or one of the following:)

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X230

Except that there is no ethernet Lan card specified.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have also investigated the following PCMCIA card : I'm currently lisaing with vendor regarding vib or Redhat / Centos driver to be made available if any. Name and link below.

- Confirmed... The Dual port (chipset Realtek 8111E) below does work with x230 Laptop and specifically vmware ESXi 5.5 however you need the vib driver downloaded from Vlanda and Erik.

StarTech.com Dual Port ExpressCard Gigabit Laptop Ethernet NIC Network Adapter Card.

- Finally, I'll try answering my own question by trying the Mini PCIe intel 82574L card and get a bit creative with the Expresscard slot to tidy things up. This option is cheaper compared to the  first option of £85 from Ebuyer as of the time of writting this post.
