Lenovo Vantage issues on T430, T430s and T470s

2018-03-22, 21:56 PM

I'm having some persistant and extremely annoying issues with Lenovo Vantage on the device models in the title.  In short, the app will open and then close immediately.  It displays no error message and all other apps work fine.

Initially I was using my enterprise server to deploy custom Windows 10 v1709 images to these devicing using MDT with SCCM integration.  Deployment, and all its process scripts, work as they should; all drivers get installed, etc; however, as stated, Lenovo Vantage simply will not work.

I have physically installed the OS' on the devices to no avail. I have enabled Developer Mode and sideloaded the app into the image both offline and online, and I have re-registered the App Packages on the system using PowerShell to no avail. The only way Lenovo Vantage will work is after doing a reset on the devices which is simply out of the question as a permanent solution. There are no health errors with any master image created on the server, all dependancy packages Lenovo Vantage states it requires within its package pack are still present within each system, there are no features enabled or disabled via Group Policy or the registry that prevent any sort of app access, nor are any of the actual app sensors disabled.  Moreover, the master images we build these OS' from simply only have bloatware Provisioned Application Packages removed (Office, Skype, BingWeather, etc.), a custom Start Menu and Task Bar Layout applied and WinMagic automatically provisions and sets up the Opal 2 security-subclass the SSD drives use for key management.

On the flip-side, if I take a RS2 (build 15063) of Windows 10, and basically remove every app, component package and feature on it, while basically completely locking down the device from any non-explicit access, Lenovo Vantage will work fine and just request access to the camera, microphone, etc., so I am not sure what the deal is with 16299+

At this point I'm figuring it's simply more reasonable to go without Lenovo Vantage and write something of my own that incorporates some of the features it has because after a few dozen trial-and-error runs, it seems like the only options are to run a full OEM build of Windows 10 RS3, or revert back to RS2.

Has anyone else experienced this utter annoyance?

I'm installing Win10 v1709 with Vantage in an MDT task sequence without any problems, using the method described here:  https://support.lenovo.com/ch/en/solutions/hf003321

How exactly are you installing Lenovo System Interface Foundation?  Are you installing it on the deployed machine, or are you trying to somehow include it in your master image?

As an experiment, on one of the machines with the broken deployment, please try to uninstall and then re-install Lenovo System Interface Foundation, will Vantage start OK then?  Instructions here.

Hello, someotherguy, and thank you for the reply.

The link you supplied is verbatim how I install it.  For builds ~16299, it gets deployed during installation of the OS; it is not integrated into a master image.  However, I have sidloaded it into offline WIM files many times before with no issue, but have only done that for trial-and-error and do not use it for active deployments.

It is not installed on the actual server.

Removal of LSIF and its reinstallation yields no change.  99% of the time, App isues will throw DCOM errors that can be audited, but zero errors are thrown.  The auditing of App health also reports no issues, even with Lenovo Vantage.

I primarily like to use this software simply for the battery threshold feature and its display lighting control, as the actual updates of drivers and the like are done over the network since the server automatically updates its deployed drivers for OEM devices.

So regardless of what you do to install/re-install Vantage + LSIF, you still have the problem you mentioned in the first post about Vantage opening and then closing immediately?  Am I understanding that correctly?  If so, can you please give me the detailed deployment steps so that I can reproduce the problem here?

I have done the most basic of "Troubleshooting" to writing a small PowerShell function so I could access it as an object on the Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal namespace, and then query whether or not there was a conflict of some sort.  The App itself is perfectly fine.  Zero conflicts and no issues with it whatsoever.

The only possible cause is if the App and Windows 10 Pro for Workstations do not play well together for some other reason, as that is the Windows 10 version that is registered on my P71 and T470s and the OS I actively use.

The only other real check I could do is install Windows 10 Pro instead temporarily just to see if the Lenovo Vantage runs fine on that flavor of Windows.  If that is the case then we can surmise that there's an issue with the App and Windows 10 Pro for Workstations.

GodHand

I got your point.  If you are able to check Windows 10 Pro, that would be really helpful.  I have not personally used that SKU of Windows 10, and since we aren't preloading that SKU yet, I doubt we have tested Vantage with it either (though I am checking on this).

Well it opens just fine on the latest Insider Update for Win 10 Pro for Workstations - v1803 17133.1

No idea why it does not work on 16299.15 (the latest Win 10 Pro for Workstations build).

I will check regular Win 10 Pro.

Same issue with Windows 10 Pro, though it opens on the Insider's Update.  I've already spent way too much time on this App so I am just going to write something that will manage those 2-3 features I used Think Vantage for.

That's really strange and I can't explain it.  Do you have active/working internet connection when you try to launch Vantage?

Seriously?  Of course.  My server is on a DS3 connection, as are the networked PCs.

It works across ALL Insider Updates, though, and build 15063, too, even after significantly modifying the master image (permanency values changed, full components removed, custom ADMX/GPO, all Provisioned App Packages removed, 60-70% of services disabled, etc.  The only real features I decided to keep were the Application sensors that affect how Apps interact across system devices, since Vantage requires that (no big deal).  Despite this, Vantage opens and runs like a charm with zero issues yet on 16299 it will only work on a completely untouched OEM build of Windows which simply will not work for us.  I even managed to sideload Vantage into Win 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 earlier and it worked, so I have no idea what the deal is.
