Re:Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 4 - Battery Issues

2021-05-16, 19:20 PM

Thanks mate, that's helpful to know, as this is my first X1 Carbon, and yes, it is the original!

Can you suggest a reliable source for finding a replacement? I know there's say, amazon or ebay, but those aren't always the most reliable sources. I'm also in Canada, if that makes any difference.

Thanks again for your time, it's been much appreciated!

Oh, and one last thought as it came to mind again, if the unit, according to the BIOS diagnostics are all 100% (not including the battery because it wasn't installed), you don't think it could have anything to do with the AC Adapter port, seeing as it powers on totally fine with the AC Adapter having the battery removed? (Even if it's as sloooow as a slug lol).

First, I can't guarantee that the battery is the only suspect here, just saying the odds are high. I just had to replace the battery in my Gen 6 after 3 years - younger than yours.

Look your system up on the Lenovo support site, go to the parts tab and select Commodity>Rechargeable Batteries. Pick one of the part numbers and feed it to https://lenovo.encompass.com/ where it will direct you to one of the most recent equivalent batteries.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

Thanks again mate, yea, don't worry, if it's not the battery, obviously you can only know so much, and seeing as that's the one thing I CANT test, it's basically my only other option I guess...I just still don't understand why the battery would cause the system to not boot at all when installed, even though the AC adapter is plugged in, but will (even though very slowly) with the battery removed: have you every come across that before? As that's a first for me.

There are definitely ThinkPads which are designed to slow down if full power battery+AC adapter is not available. I don't have an X1C4 to do any testing on, but if you're running on a 45W power supply you might get different results with a 65W supply.

The battery is NOT the problem BRMC. I got a new one and it worked but the battery never charged. It's a problem that Lenovo refuses to fix! I know that because they tell me 255% everyday!

Re:Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 4 - Battery Issues

2021-06-01, 22:28 PM

At this point, I managed to struggle with Lenovo enough for them to send me a box to have it shipped to their main repair depot in the States. I haven't replaced the battery, but I shipped it and the laptop off last week, so we'll see what their 'experts' have to say regarding the issue.

I know one individual on their phone support tried to blame it on the logic board, but that doesn't make any sense seeing as the unit was still powering on and functioning without the battery installed, though very slowly. All the extended BIOS tests came back 100% except the battery which was obviously not installed during the test.

As others in the forum have commented above, I'll just say: I have never come across a laptop that drops in speed like a 3-legged dog having the battery removed: any laptop I've worked on, powers up  100% in terms of performance with the battery removed and powered via the AC adapter, which in this case, is not 45W, but the original 65W adapter that works  completely fine, as it was tested, as well as 4 other 65W Lenovo adapters with the same issue each time: can't boot with the battery installed, and will not charge it at all.

When I hear back from the depot, I'll post what they tell me their found doing their diagnostics.

I'm interested to find out what it is and hopefully being able to apply the fix.My guess is that they will replace the motherboard and power adapter but never find the problem. It's cheaper to replace stuff then to look for the problem!

Do you have a service agreement with them?

Re:Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 4 - Battery Issues

That's the problem: I'm a computer technician, and I'm totally stumped by this issue. Again, if it were the logic board, why was it working completely fine as the battery dissipated? Doesn't make sense.

Why did it continue to power up via the AC Adapter with the battery removed if the adapter port was damaged? Again, doesn't make sense.

The system's warranty expired last March, so barely a year past it's warranty. I assume the same: they'll claim it's the logic board, although I'm sure they won't be able to say why that is, considering their own BIOS diagnostic utilities showed all components 100%. I even ran 3 other diagnostic tools on the system and couldn't find any issues.

Problem here is, they're likely to say it's the logic board, and in that case, I may as well purchase a new unit, as they'll likely try and tell me the replacement cost is more than purchasing a new unit: the classic  lose-lose scenario.

I know for a fact the adapter isn't the issue, as I tested 4 other identical ones and the same issue each time.

I'll let you know how it unfolds. Cross your fingers for me ;)
