Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 9 Mobile Broadband 5G issues

2021-05-18, 14:21 PM

Hi there

My Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 9 with inbuilt 5G broadband is not able to connect to the cellular 5G network.

I get 'No Service' showing when I click on "Cellular", even though it correctly shows Vodafone as the network name.

The APN settings are correct.
The SIM card is activated.
The latest windows and Lenovo firmware updates have been applied.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Snapdragon X55 network adapters without success.

Luckily I still have my old Lenovo X1 gen 8 laptop with cellular handy and that's working perfectly fine.

I took my SIM card out of the gen 8 and put it into my new gen 9 with the same APN settings but the gen 9 does not connect to the cellular network whereas the gen 8 does.

The thing i noticed is that when I put the SIM card in my old gen 8, I get a small window at the bottom right of the screen saying it's "Configuring mobile broadband device"
I don't see that with the Gen 9 when I install a SIM card. I've tried a couple from different carriers and the issue persists.

Grateful for any assistance

Spoke to Lenovo technical support they logged in remotely and inspected my laptop. They suggested I reimage the laptop which I did and still the same problem after reinstalling the latest firmware updates.

Tech support said they will send me a replacement. Looks like the WWAN 5G card is faulty.

Hello NicRob,

Welcome to Lenovo Community

Was the machine configured with 5G at the time of purchase?

I suggest that you share the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help us detail more about your machine variant.
Update us soon as convenient

Yes the laptop was a custom build and configured with 5G at the factory.

The exact model details are: X1 Carbon 9th Gen - (Type 20XW, 20XX) Laptop (ThinkPad) - Type 20XW-CT01WW  2021/04

5G network has 2 types:

1.  standalone 5G, you use 5G network to log in, for this case, mostly you need a special sim card works for 5G network to log in.

2.  non standalone 5G, you use 4G network to handshake and log in, and then switch to 5G, for this case, you can still use legacy sim card.

I don't know Australia, for most US service providers, the 5G sim card is different, if you use legacy sim card works for 4G LTE network, then you cannot log into the 5G network.  So maybe this is the reason.

If you have a 5G phone, better put your data sim into your phone to do a quick test.

@ujda765

I did as suggested and put the 5G SIM into my 5G phone and it works perfectly fine. Picks up a strong 5G signal on the Vodafone network no problem.

To me at least it seems to a problem with the 5G WWAN card in my Gen 9 laptop.

It could be something that a future firmware or Windows update could fix but can't be 100% certain it will be resolved anytime soon.

Wondering if anyone else in Australia is experiencing similar issues?

It may also interest you to have the tech support team of your region be informed of this discussion and how we did manage to isolate it so perhaps they would be able to offer the next option.

Lenovo X1 Yoga Gen 6 Mobile Broadband 5G issues

2021-05-24, 12:36 PM

My Lenovo X1 Yoga Gen 6 does not support mobile hotspot. (Windows 10 home, 5G WWAN model)

This mean that when I turn on the mobile hotspot in the Thinkpad and connect my phone to the SSID of Thinkpad, the traffic is blocked. (WiFi connection is successful but there is no allowed traffic)

In addition, when I make a VPN connection (using ctrix) in the Thinkpad, I cannot use the local 5G connection. (It means that I cannot use the IE or Chrome)

This function is OK with WiFi connection, but in the 5G mode, it does not work.

Should I follow the factory recover process?

I updated all the drivers using the commercial vantage.

Please help me to resolve this problem.

Hello NicRob,

Thanks for updating us here.
Hopefully the replacement will completely solve the issue

@X1C9, yes you may try the steps taken by NicRob.

You may reimage the machine, just remember to back up your files to avoid data loss
Stay safe every one

Quick update to let everyone know that I received my replacement X1 Carbon Gen 9 with the exact same spec as per the original order yesterday.

I'm happy to report that the 5G mobile broadband works fine in this machine. Looks like the WWAN card in the first laptop was faulty.

Lenovo support was excellent.
