Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 9 Throttling Issues

2021-03-29, 13:53 PM

Hello,

I have tried running low-demand games, e.g. Hades and Diablo 3 on my X1C9 (1165G7,32GB RAM) and the machine throttles every 3-5 minutes with CPU temps hitting 99 degrees Celsius.  This behaviour has been observed by other X1C9 owners as can be seen here:  Reddit Throttling X1C9

This can be resolved by unplugging the AC to run the machine in battery mode.  This sounds like we need a BIOS update to address the power issue as sustained performance seems unsustainable/damaging in AC mode.

Hello Charsiubun,

Greetings

Have you check the support site for the latest BIOS version?

Re:Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 9 Throttling Issues

Hi Lorenzo,

Updating the Bios is the first thing I did after starting up the notebook for the very first time.   Please check out the reddit forum - there are numerous users experiencing throttling on the X1C9 - seems Lenovo opted to run the CPU on maximum power draw, only to get throttled for 2-3 seconds, which is ridiculous...

We really need a BIOS update to limit the power draw or allow the user to set the power limit manually in the BIOS.  The cooling solution is unable to support this kind of power draw...

Initially, try to check the support page if there are newly release update for the BIOS.

You may also try changing power scheme option from what is currently set with ac charger connected perhaps having it the same with battery connected.

Re:Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 9 Throttling Issues

2021-04-22, 11:36 AM

Hi@all,

i basically have the same issue with my X1C9 i7-1185G7, 32 GB, 4K model.

Just received it on tuesday this week and did basically nothing to heavy workload (so for testing i ran Minecraft or CPU Z benchmarking or watched a 8k video (just to see how CPU is reacting)) but after couple of minutes CPU got up to 100 celcius and throttled on all Cores down to 0.4 MHz for approx 10 sec. and got up to 2.5 GHz until it hit 100 celcius again and it started the throttling circle again.

I have updated the BIOS to the neweset version and installed the newest drivers and all of that.

So this behaivior is not really helping in using this device for a little more workload related activities.

I have contacted the support and will receive now a new device since this seems not be normal behavoir. But reading couple more of this thermal throttling issues in this forum and in others i fear that this is a general issue in this device.

Any thoughts or experince here that you can share? I might think of a mitigation if that is really the case that the X1C9 has in general a thermal issue and can not take heavier workloads without throttling most of the time.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks!

A) Hey folks, did you try to disable the following to see if it helps?

In [Programs_&_Features]>>[Turn_Windows_Features_On/Off]:

1. Disable:  Hyper-V

2. Disable:  Virtual Machine Platform

3. Disable:  Windows Hypervisor Platoform

B) Please share your findings after you have done the above!

C) FYI, the X1 Extreme Gen 1 was demonstrated to lower the CPU throttling down threshold to slow down the CPU, presumably to prevent excessive CPU overheating when above 1/2/3 was installed (note: installed, and not necessarily used).

No idea if above works for X1 Carbon Gen 9, but at least this helped for X1 Extreme Gen 1 !

Daily Driver: X1 Extreme Gen 3 (X1E-3) | WWAN (mobile broadband)

Re:Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 9 Throttling Issues

Thanks for the potential "workaround", but i think this makes no sense to me since i have exactly decided to purchase a vPro CPU to be able to run virtualisation and things that relates to that.

From my perspective it is either a BIOS issue or the whole concept of the X1C9 with the i7 1185G7 is faulty and the thermal budget is to small for such a CPU which i hope is not the case...

I really like the size of the device it is a little bit larger then my X280... and my hopes were that with the additional power (faster CPU and more RAM) compared to the X280 it would be my daily driver and a worthwhile upgrade..

The X1C9 compared to the X280 is throttling very heavily running the same benchmarks or workloads which is quite odd for me...

Hope this will be solved with the replacement (DOA) that i get ...

Re:Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 9 Throttling Issues

Do any one know if there is a BIOS for the X1C9 version that did not thottle that much? I still cannot imagine, that my X280 (i7 8650U, 16GB, FullHD) is performing better than the X1C9 in terms of thermal throttling...

Would appreciate your feedback here. Thank.

Best
