Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 3 | TrackPoint buttons issue

2021-05-13, 15:29 PM

I am having problems with the TrackPoint buttons on Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 3 (buttons above the TrackPad). The problem is that buttons are not registered if pressed very lightly, but beyond the "click" feel and sound, and click also stops way before the button has "click off". The same is true for all three TrackPoint buttons. This is not too much of a problem for click and double click actions, but drag&drop and especially scrolling through several pages is unbearable and very annoying.

I bought the laptop a month ago, noticed a problem after a few days, sent it to a seller, and a seller sent it to a service centre for a repair under the warranty. Got the laptop back after a few weeks, but the problem is still the same. I tried to capture this button behaviour on video with a mechanical comparator pressing the middle button where you can clearly see the "click on" and "click off" moments and registered clicks are visible on the laptop screen. Regardless of the exact pressing area on a button, buttons behave the same leaving a big gap between "click on" and "click off" where clicks are intermittently registered.

Does all Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 3 TrackPoint buttons behave the same or did I just run twice into those with a malfunction?

Hello Pin9777,

Welcome to Lenovo Community

I suggest that you update the BIOS and drivers thru the support site.
Also under BIOS, load the default settings then save before exiting.
Restart the computer and try the buttons again.
Update us how it goes

Regards,
Lorenzo_Lenovo

Hello Lorenzo_Lenovo,

thanks for your help. I have already updated drivers and BIOS through the Commercial Vantage app and Windows Updates. My current BIOS version is N2VET29W 1.14. As you suggested I also did the load of BIOS default settings, but it did not solve the problem.

Kind regards

I suggest that you uninstall the touchpad/trackpoint drivers.
Put a tick on the check box to fully remove the drivers from the system.
Then from the same support site, download and install a fresh copy of the driver.
Update us how it goes

Re:Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 3 | TrackPoint buttons issue

I uninstalled "Synaptics Pointing Device" with the drivers and instaled "Synaptics UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (Version 1909 or later)" version 19.5.19.75. The problem is still the same.

I would like to point out that I also tried to test buttons after uninstalling the drivers and restarting, without installing the new drivers. The buttons behaviour is the same. They work perfectly if they are pressed hard or beyond the click feel, but the problem occurs when the button is pressed for a long time and when pressure on it is weaker than the initial pressure required for a click, but still strong enough to keep it continuously pressed. Although, with a very light button push it is possible to click the button without it being registered at all.

I am afraid this is a hardware problem and my only option is to send the laptop back to service and hope the problem will be solved with a new keyboard. I would just like to check that this is not a problem with the whole keyboard production series. In that case, maybe it would be better to wait a while until the problem is solved and use the laptop in the meanwhile as it is.

Here is another video with a simple test that shows the TrackPoint buttons problem. You can clearly hear and see that buttons click on and click off do not match the button detection. The button is still pressed but not registered when pressed lightly.

I am experiencing this exact problem. The left button does not register as clicked unless a bit of force is required. When I lightly press on it, it does not register.

Hmm... perhaps it's your specific machine that needs to be looked into by repair depot, if you do strongly feel that it's an issue for you...

As for us, we have also been using X1 Extreme Gen 3, and the TrackPoint buttons are working as intended, and is working normally for us.

(By the way, we have also used other ThinkPads as per below list, and we can attest that X1 Extreme Gen 3 TrackPoint buttons on our machine is OK).

Daily Driver: X1 Extreme Gen 3 (X1E-3) | WWAN (mobile broadband)
X1E-3, X1E-1, X1C-9, X1C-4, X1C-3, X230
Retired Thinkpads: X250, T410, T42, 560 (circa 1996)
Also: IBM Thinkpad era computer bag !

The video does show that it does likely suggest hardware key failure.
With such you may have to reach out to the technical team of your region for needed attention.
